Men's Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short At Baruch, 103-93, On Wednesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team trailed by 17 at the half. The Bloodhounds rallied to outscore Baruch, 44-35, to get within ten, 91-81, but couldn't complete the comeback, as John Jay fell 103-93 on Wednesday evening. 
 
With the setback, the Bloodhounds fall to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in CUNYAC play while the Bearcats move to 8-7 on the year and remain perfect in conference action at 4-0. 
 
Four Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Jamir Stewart, who poured in a team-high 26 points, his fourth 20-point outing of the season, on 7 of 11 shooting from the floor. Stewart converted on 7 of 10 from the outside in his 32 minutes of play. 
 
Isaac Holmes registered 21 points, nine of which coming from the free-throw line while dishing out seven assists in 36 minutes. 
 
Garrison Watkins netted 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting while filling up the statsheet, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block in 37 minutes. 
 
Jordan Evelyn rounded out the double-digit performances for the visitors, finishing with 11 points while matching Holmes with seven assists. 
 
Four Bearcats reached double figures in the contest, led by Devin Nicholson, who scored 28 points on 11 of 18 shooting while hitting on 4 of 9 from three-point range. Sayeed Osorio netted 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting while converting on 5 of 6 from long range. 
 
Emil Purisic recorded a double-double with 15 points on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting display from the floor while grabbing ten rebounds, nine coming on the defensive end. He also dished out a team-leading seven assists in 33 minutes. Jehmehl Fair contributed 14 points on 6 of 12 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists. 
 
The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 8-3 lead, capped by a jumper from Watkins. Baruch raced back with a 9-3 run of their own to take a 12-11 lead before Stewart drilled a three-pointer off the feed from TJ Chisolm
 
The Bearcats continued their offensive prowess, staging a 16-1 run in building a 28-15 lead with 9:14 to go in the first half. Stewart dialed up another three for the visitors that trimmed the lead down to ten, 30-20, before Baruch outscored John Jay, 17-9, to extend their lead to 47-30 with 2:18 showing on the clock. The home team scored eight of the final 14 points of the first to take a 54-37 halftime lead. 

Baruch converted on 64.5 percent (20 of 31) from the field in the opening half while holding the Bloodhounds to just 38.5 (10 of 26). Both teams shot over 50.0 percent from three-point distance in the opening frame with John Jay hitting on 7 of 13 (53.9 percent) while Baruch shot 10 of 17 (58.8 percent).

When the second half commenced, the Bearcats took their largest lead of the contest, 81-58, following a jumper by Mohamed Gueye at the 11:58. John Jay regained their composure and started to stage a comeback of their own, staging a 22-12 run over a 4:42 span that saw the Bloodhounds trail 93-83 with 4:52 left to go. 

Nicholson stopped the run with a jumper, getting the feed from Gerard Nicholson before Stewart hit another three that cut the lead down to single digits, 95-86. Evelyn spotted Adrian Kopec who connected on a three-pointer that brought the Bloodhounds to within eight, but on the ensuing Baruch possession, Purisic slammed home the feed from Nicholson that pushed the lead back to double-digits. 

Nicholson sank two more free throws with 19 seconds before Watkins cruised down the lane, uncontested, for the layup for the final point of the game. 

John Jay finished the game shooting 50.0 percent from the field (26 of 52) while hitting on a season-high 15 three pointers on 27 attempts (55.6 percent). John Jay also made a season-high 26 free-throws while scoring a season-best 93 points. 

Baruch converted 62.1 percent (41 of 66) while hitting on 48.4 percent from three-point range (15 of 31). 
 
John Jay returns home to The Doghouse on Saturday, January 13, as they square off against Lehman at 3:00 p.m.
