Late Second Half Surge By Men's Basketball Not Enough; Falls At CCNY, 85-77, On Wednesday

New York, NY - Trailing by 17 at the intermission, the John Jay men's basketball team staged a valiant comeback effort, a 24-9 run, trimming the CCNY Beavers lead to two, 59-57, midway through the stanza, but squandered their slim 72-71 advantage in the later stages of the half, falling 85-77 on Wednesday evening. 
 
With this evening's decision, the Bloodhounds stand at 5-12 overall and 1-5 in CUNYAC play while the Beavers even their conference mark at 3-3 and move to 10-7 on the season. 
 
Graduate Garrison Watkins was one of three Bloodhounds to finish in double-figures, as he went for a team-high 21 points on a blistering 9 of 10 shooting from the field. This marked his 13th double-digit scoring game this season and the third time he has eclipsed the 20-point plateau. 
 
Additionally, the Staten Island, NY native reached a personal milestone, as the former Curtis standout recorded his 500th career rebound in the second half, finishing with five on the evening in 28 minutes of action. 
 
 
Jordan Evelyn went for a career-best 20 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the floor in his 37 minutes of play. The Hempstead, NY native corralled a team-leading eight caroms while dishing out a team-high four assists. 
 
Isaac Holmes rounded out the double-digit scoring performances for the visitors, as he netted ten points in 25 minutes of action. 
 
CCNY had four players reach double-figures, paced by Jordan Williams, who scored a team-high 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field while connecting on 5 of 9 from the outside in his 30 minutes. 
 
Ricardo Dixon and Yassine Sakhi each notched a double-double. Dixon tallied 16 points on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting display from the floor while grabbing a game-high ten rebounds. Sakhi scored 15 points on 6 of 13 shooting while distributing a game-best 11 assists. Edward Beqiri chipped in 13 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in 37 minutes of work for CCNY. 
 
Watkins got the scoring going for the visitors early with four quick points before the Beavers rallied back on a 18-2 run, capped by a Sakhi layup that gave CCNY a 20-6 advantage seven minutes into the contest. The two squads exchange points over the next nine minutes, as CCNY outscored John Jay by a slim 20-17 margin, holding a 38-23 as Watkins converted on his fifth straight basket. 
 
The Beavers went on to hold a 17-point lead at the break, 50-33, but Watkins continued to fire on all cylinders, hitting his seventh straight field to finish the half with 14 points. 
 
John Jay shot 41.2 percent from the floor in the opening half and was held to just 25.0 percent from the outside (3 of 12) while CCNY converted on 73.1 percent from the field in the opening frame (19 of 26) and held a 21-7 edge on the boards (18-4 on the defensive end). 
 
When play resumed for the second half, momentum had shifted in favor of the Bloodhounds, as the visitors embarked on a 16-6 run, trimming the once 17-point lead to just seven, 56-49, as Watkins completed the traditional three-play for his 17th point of the evening. 
 
John Jay went 6 of 7 during the four-minute run as Holmes netted seven of his ten points over this stretch. The Bloodhounds continued to further cut into the CCNY lead, as an 8-3 spurt made it a one possession game, 59-57, at the 12:13 mark, as Watkins again came up clutch for the visitors, banking home a layup off the pass from TJ Chisolm
 
The Beavers scored nine of the next 11 points, extending their lead to nine, 68-59, following a Beqiri layup with 8:55 remaining in regulation. John Jay refused to be denied, as the Bloodhounds utilized a 13-3 run to take their first lead of the contest since the 18:25 mark of the first half (4-2), as Evelyn weaved his way through the lane and knock in the layup before being fouled. He misfired on the free-throw as Kayson Dinkins got the loose ball and wound up with a look from the outside and connecting, giving the lead back to CCNY, 74-72, with 4:33 left to play. 

Jeremiah Cardi nearly gave the Bloodhounds the lead back, but his three-point attempt bounced out, but, Cardi tracked down the loose ball and lay it back up, knotting the contest at 74-74. On the ensuing Beavers possession, Williams connected on one of the biggest shots of the night for CCNY, drilling a three-pointer from Sakhi, as they went up 77-74. CCNY limited John Jay to just 1 of 7 down the stretch and converted on 8 of 12 from the free-throw line to hold on for the eight-point victory. 

John Jay held CCNY to just 37.5 percent in the second half and for the game, the Bloodhounds hit on 44.3 percent while the Beavers shot an economic 56.0 percent from the field. CCNY held the edge on the boards, outrebounding John Jay, 46-30, which included a 34-19 mark on the defensive glass. John Jay committed just seven turnovers on the night while forcing 16 CCNY mishaps, which resulted in 22 points for the visitors.

John Jay closes out the week with a trip into Brooklyn, as the Bloodhounds square off against the Medgar Evers College Cougars on Friday, January 19 with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
