Men's Volleyball Bests Purchase For First Home Triumph Of 2024 Campaign

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team earned their first victory of the 2024 season, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Purchase College Panthers, 3-1 (25-17; 25-11; 20-25; 25-15) at The Doghouse on Monday evening. 
 
With the victory, John Jay evens their overall record to 1-1 on the young season while Purchase falls to 1-2 on the year. 
 

 
Logan Ramos matched his career high in kills while recording a double-double as the Riverdale, NY native finished with a team-leading 17 kills to go along with 14 digs for 18 points. Kyle Barriffe-Johnson also recorded a career-high in kills, as he finished with 14 on the evening to go along with five total blocks and one ace to match Ramos with 18 points. Alex Bridgelall served up a game-high 36 assists to go along with a career-high nine aces while adding six digs and six kills for 16 points while Sebastian Rodriguez finished with eight kills and six digs for ten points for the Bloodhounds. 

Channing Williams led the way for the visitors as he recorded a team-high nine kills to go along with seven digs for 12 points. Nate Matthie recorded seven kills, seven digs and three aces for ten points. Aidan Araza served up 17 assists for the Panthers on the night. 
 
First Set - The two teams traded off points with Matthie recording an ace for Purchase that knotted the set at 5-5. The Bloodhounds went on a 5-0 run to double up the lead before the Panthers responded with a 5-0 run of their own to tie it at 10-10 on a block from Udel Phillips. John Jay took control of the set, igniting an 11-4 run that saw the lead swell to 21-14 following a bad set from Mauricio Ramirez, that forced the visitors to call for time. The Bloodhounds scored five of the final seven points in the first set, capped by a from Steven Ajazi from Bridgelall as John Jay led 1-0 in the overall match. The home team recorded 12 kills in 24 attack attempts while hitting .375 in the opening set and held Purchase to a .091 hitting percentage. 

Second Set - For the second consecutive set, the two teams exchanged points with the not exceeding two, when John Jay went ahead 10-8 on a kill from Bridgelall. The Bloodhounds sealed the second thanks largely to a 15-3 run, with Bridgelall racking up three aces as John Jay secured a 25-11 win. The home team didn't commit an attack error in the set while hitting a blistering .588. 
 
Third Set - Purchase jumped out to a 7-4 lead following a service error from newcomer Kensley Jean Gilles. John Jay rallied to take leads of 11-10 and 12-11 before the Panthers closed out the set on a 14-8 run in getting on the board and trailing 2-1 in the overall match. 
 
Fourth Set - In what turned out to be the final set of the night, the Bloodhounds jumped ahead 10-4 with Bridgelall serving up three straight aces. Purchase chipped away at the lead, getting to within six, 14-8, following a service error by John Jay. The Bloodhounds outscored the Panthers, 11-6, as Rodriguez sealed the home win with a kill. 

For the match, the Bloodhounds hit at a .333 clip, recording a total of 49 kills. John Jay had only 14 attack errors in the match. The team had 15 aces while also recording 47 digs, all season-best. 

 
The Bloodhounds close out their homestand on Wednesday evening as John Jay welcomes Bard College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. from The Doghouse.
