Women's Basketball's Seven-Game Win Streak Halted By Brooklyn On Saturday In Battle Of CUNYAC's Top Two Teams

New York, NY - In a clash of the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) top two women's basketball teams this season, the John Jay Bloodhounds fought valiantly down the stretch but fell to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 74-63, on Saturday afternoon from The Doghouse. 
 
John Jay and Brooklyn both post identical 13-7 overall records but the Bloodhounds fall to 7-2 in league play while the Bulldogs move to 8-2, a game ahead in the league standings. 

Two Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Kamryn Hammond, who finished with a team-high 15 points. Hammond grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while dishing out six assists and recording four steals, both team-highs. 

Ashley Zeolla shot an economic 6 of 12 from the field in finishing with 13 points while grabbing four rebounds and recording two steals in her 32 minutes of play. Ayanna Edwards tallied nine points while Chayanne Kelly and Michaela Lattimore each finished with eight points. 

Four Bulldogs finished in double-figures led by Alina Estrella, who scored a team-best 14 points while leading the charge on the boards, grabbing seven and dishing out four assists for the visitors. 

Anna Kitch and Aleah Rafat each tallied 12 points on a combined 8 of 17 shooting from the floor while converting on a combined 5 of 11 from three-point range. Kitch hit on 4 of 8 from the outside while grabbing six rebounds as well. Ericka James was the final Bulldog in double-digits, as she finished with 11 points on 4 of 9 shooting from the floor and was plagued by foul trouble. 

The two teams traded baskets for the majority of the first quarter as Kitch gave the visitors their first lead with a three-pointer, which ignited a 10-1 run over a 4:05 span that saw Brooklyn doubled up its lead, 14-7, following a pair of made free-throw from Rafat.Lattimore found her scoring prowess during a 6-0 run in which the Morristown, NJ brought the Bloodhounds to within one, 14-13, following a layup off the feed from Hammond. Kitch closed out the quarter with another triple as Brooklyn led by four, 17-13. 

The Bulldogs seized control of the momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Bloodhounds, 23-6, over an eight minute stretch in which the lead swelled to 40-19, following by Estrella. Tiffany Bogle, who finished with six points and six rebounds in 16 minutes, hit a jumper that put a stop to the Bulldogs run. 

Hammond and Edwards scored the final four points of the quarter as John Jay trailed 40-25 heading into the locker rooms. In the frame, the Bloodhounds were held to just 3 of 14 shooting from the floor (21.4 percent) while the visitors converted on 9 of 18 shooting from the field and 5 of 9 from three-point distance (55.6 percent). 

John Jay began their comeback effort, outscoring the Bulldogs, 13-8, over a six-minute stretch that trimmed the deficit down to ten, 48-38, when Bogle again hit on a jumper from inside the arc off the feed from Edwards. Brooklyn netted 11 of the final 19 points of the third quarter in going ahead by a 59-46 count as the Bulldogs only went 1 of 2 from the field during the 3:30 spurt, but capitalized from the free-throw line, hitting on 8 of 12 attempts. 

Both teams struggled in the early points of the fourth quarter, but, John Jay scored six of the first nine points of the stanza in bringing the Bulldogs' lead down to 62-52 at the 5:35 mark. 

John Jay couldn't get the lead down any further, as Brooklyn finished the contest outscoring the Bloodhounds, 12-11, while holding the home team to just 2 of 8 from the field down the stretch in taking a one-game lead in the season standings. 

The Bloodhounds shot 33.3 percent from the floor for the contest (20 of 60) while the Bulldogs hit on 43.4 percent from the field (23 of 53). John Jay made just one three-pointer in the contest while Brooklyn hit on 10 of 23 from the outside. The home team held a 43-39 edge on the glass, highlighted by a 22-14 advantage on the offensive end. 

The Bloodhounds will head to The Bronx on Wednesday, February 7, as they wrap up their season series with Lehman College. 

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
