Danbury, Conn. - The John Jay women's volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night, as the Bloodhounds made their penultimate non-conference road trip of the season.
The Bloodhounds returned to the campus of Western Connecticut State University for the first time since 2019, falling to the WestConn Wolves in three sets.
Rookie
Julia Stuart returned to the lineup for the first time since Sept. 28, leading the visitors with nine kills.
WestConn found its rhythm early in the first set, hitting for .235 with 12 kills as a group.
Paige Sadowitz was the lone offensive contributor early, scoring a kill and an ace looking to kickstart the Bloodhounds offense.
Sadowitz matched Stuart with two kills each in the opener, with WestConn taking a 25-15 first-set win.
Stuart got an earlier jump in set two, as the freshman helped
Madison Reyes and
Meghan Smith with kills to pull John Jay within one point, 8-9.
The second set was the Bloodhounds' most competitive, with five different hitters converting a successful swing. Both sides were neck and neck down the homestretch, with John Jay even taking its first lead, 19-18, of the season with an
Ellmedina Hodzic ace.
WestConn's attack outmuscled the visitors in the final points of the middle set, taking all seven of the last points for a 25-19 win.
The Bloodhounds improved through all three sets offensively, increasing their total kills in each frame. They kept within striking distance with two separate four-point runs; Sadowitz, Stuart and
Alex Overkamp all registered kills in those streaks.
Despite the runs, the Bloodhounds were unable to keep pace by the final serves, dropping the third set, 17-25.
Julia Stuart, in her return to action, finished the three-set match with nine kills and two solo blocks.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds travel to the east side of Manhattan to Lexington Avenue for a key CUNYAC match-up against Baruch on Thursday, Oct. 17. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
