New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team maintained its momentum from the weekend, scoring a three-set victory of the City College of New York (CCNY) Beavers.
The win marks a sixth straight win over CCNY for the program and the team's fourth consecutive win this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bloodhounds opened the first set with seven kills in the first 14 points, to take an early 10-7 advantage.
After briefly falling behind, 10-11, a handful of Bloodhounds contributed to take the next six points to go ahead, 16-11. Paige Sadowitz added a kill and a block in the sequence, with Nina Bongiovanni and Josanne Lewis scoring a good swing as well.
Two aces by Bongiovanni helped seal the 25-18 win in the opening frame.
The visitors hit .312 in the first set, its highest mark in any set in the match.
John Jay was tasked with overcoming eight attack errors in the second set, with the Beavers playing their best period on the attack. The Bloodhounds trailed by as many as 13-17 late in the middle frame.
After pulling within one point, Madison Reyes and Reilly Catan pushed their side ahead with three straight points. Reyes, Lewis and Bongiovanni all scored kills in the final four points to give the Bloodhounds a 25-23 second-set win.
The Bloodhounds looked to leave nothing to chance in the third set, scoring 13 of the first 16 points of the final frame.
Ellmedina Hodzic scored her second service ace of the match to give her side an 18-8, ten-point lead late in the third set. CCNY was able to pull back within six after responding with a timeout, but the Bloodhounds seized on 12 total Beaver attack errors, including three in the final four points, to take the win.
Lewis finished as the Bloodhounds' kill leader in the match, accounting for nine successful swings. Catan finished with eight kills.
Hodzic recorded a career night as the Bloodhounds' setter, closing the match with 30 assists in the three-set win.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds play their final home CUNYAC contest of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 29 against York College. The match at The Doghouse is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
