New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball program secured its third consecutive season with double-digit wins on Thursday night, as the current roster defeated Pratt in straight sets.
The Thursday evening victory marks two straight headed into the Bloodhounds' final home tri-match of the season and marks nine sweeps this campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
John Jay held the Pratt Cannoneers to just four kills in the opening set. The Bloodhounds' Reilly Catan served up a pair of aces, helping her team jump out to a 9-2 advantage in the first set. She continued to contribute to the attack in the opening frame, adding five total kills in the first set.
Meghan Smith topped her performance behind the line with four service aces down the stretch as the Bloodhounds scored eight of the final nine points to win 25-7.
The Cannoneers posed more of a challenge in the second set, taking an early 6-5 lead thanks to the play of Anabela Jakelic and Colleen Russell at the net.
Theresa Schmitt two kills in the set helped the Bloodhounds turn a two-point deficit to a four-point lead with a 9-3 run. Pratt pulled back to tie the set at 21-all but the hosts secured the final three points of the set. Alex Overkamp secured her team a 25-22 win with her lone kill in set two.
Three new Bloodhounds entered the fold to start the third set: Dina Hodzic, Madison Reyes and Hannah Knox.
Knox and Reyes were strong in the middle, scoring a double block at the net on Pratt's Colleen Russell to punctuate an 8-2 run at the start of the set.
Catan capped off a match-leading ten kills in the clinching set with four successful swings in the third, including a pair that helped push John Jay's lead to 13-5.
Knox and Overkamp inched their side closer to a victory with a kill each, upping the lead to 18-9.
Pratt erased the deficit with its last gasp, even taking a brief 22-21 lead, as the unfamiliar Bloodhound lineup learned to work together cohesively.
Knox and Schmitt secured victory for the home side; first with a pair of aces by Knox and closed out with a Schmitt kill.
The 25-23 third set winner closed out the 3-0 victory for the Bloodhounds.
Reilly Catan was the match leader with ten kills and four aces. Meghan Smith matched Catan's ace total and added a match-leading 16 assists.
Theresa Schmitt led her team with eight digs, while contributing eight kills.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds host Ramapo and Western New England in their final home tri-match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 5. John Jay faces Ramapo at 11:00 a.m and faces Western New England at 3:00 p.m. with the visiting teams squaring off at 1:00 p.m.
