Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday's Tri-Match With Ramapo and Western New England

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team split their Saturday tri-match with Ramapo and Western New England. The Bloodhounds rallied to defeat the Roadrunners, 3-1 (22-25; 25-22; 25-13; 25-19) before falling to the Golden Bears, 3-0 (20-25; 20-25; 23-25).

John Jay moves to 11-5 overall following Saturday's results.

The Bloodhounds dropped the opening set, 25-22, before rallying against the Roadrunners, picking up three straight wins (25-22, 25-13, and 25-19) to earn the victory. 

Reilly Catan and Josanne Lewis each produced double-doubles, as both finished with 11 kills while Catan added 12 digs. Lewis notched 11 digs. Meghan Smith had 34 assists to go along with eight digs in the opening match. Madison Reyes had six blocks assisted to go along with seven kills.  Newcomer Nina Bongiovanni had six kills and six digs while Paige Sadowitz also added six kills and a team-leading five aces. 

Riley Stewart led the way for Ramapo, tallying 14 kills to go along with five digs. Emma Garcia had a team-high 18 digs. Katie Bishop had 19 assists.

The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before the Roadrunners rallied to even the set following a kill from Kaitlyn Van Zile. Ramapo used an 8-3 run to take a 12-7 lead. With the score, 17-13, in favor of the visitors, it was the Bloodhounds that mounted a comeback, knotting the set at 17 apiece on an ace from Catan.
The two teams traded points before Bishop sealed the set with an ace. 

In the second set, the Bloodhounds came out on a 6-1 run, capped by an ace from Bongiovanni. Ramapo narrowed the gap to 6-5. Four straight points, highlighted by a block from Madison Reyes and Smith doubled the lead to 10-5. Ramapo used a 6-2 run to close the gap to 12-11. A 7-3 outburst by John Jay made it 19-14 following a kill from Catan. The Roadrunners continued to fight back in the set, getting to within two, 21-19, on a kill from Stewart but John Jay was able to hang on to even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, John Jay commenced the set with a pair of Sadowitz aces. Ramapo staged a four-point rally before John Jay answered with a 10-3 run, capped by a kill from Lewis. The Bloodhounds took a 2-1 lead in the match after a 9-2 run closed out the third set. 

John Jay carried that momentum into the final set, opening the fourth set on a 6-0 run. The Bloodhound increased their lead to 10-2 following an ace from Malia ReyesThe Bloodhounds took a 20-11 lead on a kill from Sadowitz before the Roadrunners chipped into the deficit. An attack error by Emily Shea sealed the win for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay hit .171 for the match while limiting Ramapo to just .041. The Bloodhounds recorded a total of 14 aces to Ramapo's four.

The Bloodhounds rallied for much of the three sets against the visiting Western New England Golden Bears. Lewis posted her second straight double-double, finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs. Catan finished a kill shy of a second straight double-double, as she added 12 digs. Kristin Gretener posted a team-high 16 digs and six assists. Smith added 15 more assists to her ledge while notching seven digs.

WNE's Alissa Hawes racked up 15 kills and 10 digs to pace the Golden Bears. Four players finished with double-digit digs, led by Becca Mayer, who had 18. Lea Barber had 14 while Hawes and Taylor Geist finished with ten.

In the first set, John Jay trailed 7-3 as the Golden Bears continued to add to their lead, using a 13-6 run, as Leah Warren gave WNE a 20-10 advantage. John Jay clawed back with a kill from Bongiovanni, as the Bloodhounds closed the gap to 23-19. 

In the second set, the two teams traded points before Gretener recorded an ace that gave John Jay a slim, 9-8 lead. Western New England staged a 6-1 run to increase their lead to 14-10. John Jay scored seven of the next 13 points to trim the lead down to 20-17 on a block from Bongiovanni and Sadowitz.The visitors scored the next four points and sealed the set win on a kill from Warren.

In the third set, the visitors went ahead 5-1 to start. John Jay evened the set at 10-10 before a kill from Madison Reyes gave JJC a one-point edge. The Bloodhounds found themselves ahead, 21-20 before the Golden Bears closed out with a 5-2 run on an ace from Mayer. 

John Jay was held to just a .062 hitting percentage while WNE hit on .137. 

The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Tuesday, October 8, as they will host Medgar Evers at the Doghouse. First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
