New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team closed out the traditional non-conference schedule on Thursday evening with the program's first win over FDU-Florham.
The win over the Devils moves the Bloodhounds to 18 wins on the season; the second consecutive season with at least 18 victories.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bloodhounds never trailed in the opening set, holding FDU-Florham to just six kills and a negative hitting percentage with eight attack errors.
After a pair of kills by Paige Sadowitz to break an early tie, Julia Stuart was the spark plug off the bench to help cement the lead. Her first two successful swings of the night started a 4-0 to help her side double up the visitors, 12-6.
Meghan Smith and Madison Reyes combined for five total blocks in the first set. Their final combined block of the opening frame kicked off the final rally of the set as Malia Reyes served the final ten points.
Three of those ten points went down as aces for Reyes as the Bloodhounds surged to a 25-12 first-set win. The home side hit .200 to kick the match off with 11 kills and four aces.
The Bloodhounds took a 5-0 advantage in the first five points of the second set with a kill by Josanne Lewis, a block by Sadowitz and an ace by Kristin Gretener.
Reilly Catan helped extend the lead later in the set, scoring two kills and an ace as part of a 6-1 scoring run. That ace doubled up the Devils, 14-7.
The FDU-Florham blockers had their best set in the middle frame, logging a match-high six total blocks. Their work at the net, combined with a match-high seven Bloodhound attack errors, helped the visitors pull within five points, 16-21 late in the second.
Pure offense sealed the second set win for John Jay, as Reyes scored two of her five aces for the match and Rylea Sandel and Meghan Smith each logged a kill in the final stretch. The Bloodhounds sealed a 25-16 win in the second frame.
Ellmedina Hodzic and Alex Overkamp entered the match to start the third set, as the Bloodhounds looked to seal a three-set victory.
Despite trailing early, 5-4, Catan and Lewis shouldered half the workload to help get the Bloodhounds to a 12-5 lead on an 8-0 run. Lewis scored her only two aces of the match, while Catan hit two of her season-high 14 kills.
Both Catan and Lewis hit a match-high mark in kills in the final set, with Catan finishing with seven and Lewis finishing with six.
A 7-1 run pushed the Bloodhound lead to double digits late in the third and the home side closed out the sweep with a 25-17 win.
Catan led the Bloodhounds with 14 kills, hitting .314 for the match.
Lewis recorded her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 10 kills and 11 digs.
Malia Reyes led all players with five aces, her second-highest mark this season.
Smith scored a season-high three total blocks, adding 27 assists.
