Bronx, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team closed out the in-conference regular season slate with a three-set victory over the Lehman College Lightning on Tuesday night.
The Bloodhounds finish with a 6-1 record against CUNY Athletic Conference foes, good for second place in the overall conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
John Jay was able to seize on eight first-set attacking errors by the host Lightning and jump out to an 8-5 lead.
The Bloodhound lead never grew larger than four points until the final stretch, as Madison Reyes scored three kills in the final six points to help give the visitors on a 25-19 lead.
Reyes matched Theresa Schmitt to lead all players with three kills each in the first set. Alex Overkamp led all players with three total blocks.
Reilly Catan kicked off the defining run of the second set, scoring three kills and one service ace in five points as the Bloodhounds took a 9-6 lead. The lead grew to as much as 12-7.
Both sides shared a comparable sideout percentage down the stretch, trading points to the final whistle. After the Bloodhound lead was cut to 23-20, Catan and Julia Stuart scored the final two kills of the set to secure the win and send the match to the third frame.
Catan led all players with seven kills; showing an uptick in offensive production with Josanne Lewis, who added six total kills.
Ellmedina Hodzic joined the proceedings for the third set, replacing Malia Reyes who donned the libero jersey for Kristin Gretener.
Catan shined again in the third set, this time from the service line. The senior scored four aces in the opening run to push her side to a 7-1 win.
The Bloodhounds maintained a sizable advantage throughout the set. Nina Bongiovanni jumped in and immediately scored a pair of kills to give John Jay a 14-5 lead.
A match-high total of seven aces in the final frame propelled the Bloodhounds to their biggest set win of the night. The visitors closed out the match with a 25-11 set victory.
Josanne Lewis led all players with 11 kills and 10 digs. Catan's five aces in the match counted as a season-high for the senior, adding seven kills.
Meghan Smith registered 31 assisted, the eighth time she has counted that many assists in a match this season.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds will hold their Senior Night on Thursday, Nov. 7 with a non-conference match-up against CCNY. The match inside The Doghouse is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with the Senior Night ceremony held just before first serve.
