New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team secured its second CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win of the season on Tuesday night, dispatching Medgar Evers in straight sets.
The Bloodhounds combined for a season-high 27 service aces in the three-set victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dropping the first point of the set, Meghan Smith and Madison Reyes combined for four aces to help give the home side a 10-2 advantage.
The Bloodhounds allowed just three more Cougar points for the remainder of the set as they totaled ten of their 27 aces in the opening frame to take a 25-5 win.
Josanne Lewis tallied five kills in her lone set against Medgar Evers.
Ellmedina Hodzic started the second set with a trio of aces to stamp a 4-0 lead. Rylea Sandel kept the momentum rolling with three straight kills to help boost the Bloodhounds' lead of 9-1.
Getting the start at libero, Malia Reyes flexed her serving abilities adding three aces of her own as the John Jay lead grew to 12 points. The home team clinched the second set win with successful swings by Hannah Knox and Paige Sadowitz, closing out at a score of 25-7.
The Bloodhounds looked to close out the third set with the same lineup with which they concluded the second set. Reyes and Alex Overkamp accounted for the first four points for the Bloodhounds, giving their team a 4-3 lead.
Hodzic clinched a career-high playing in the outside slot, converting three kills in the third set. After the Cougars pulled within one on a handful of Bloodhound errors, Theresa Schmitt helped put the set out of reach with four kills in a seven-point run. A final pair of aces by Hodzic clinched the CUNYAC victory, winning the third set 25-15.
Alex Overkamp and Rylea Sandel led the match with six kills each. Malia Reyes' seven aces led all players and count as a career-high for the sophomore.
