New York, NY - For the first time in program history, the John Jay women's volleyball team hosted a CUNYAC semifinal match and earned a spot in the league championship match, besting the No. 3 Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-22).
The Bloodhounds, who move to 21-6 on the season, will square off against the No. 1 seed Hunter Hawks, who defeated Baruch this evening in the first semifinal match. Brooklyn finishes the season at 14-14.
Reily Catan led the way with 11 kills while hitting a robust .458 and adding nine digs.
Madison Reyes tallied ten kills.
Malia Reyes and
Meghan Smith each had 13 digs, with Smith notching 33 assists.
Josanne Lewis finished the contest with 12 digs, while
Paige Sadowitz recorded four aces.
Aleah Rafat led the visitors with 11 kills and added 11 digs. Ruti Joshi posted 13 digs, while Amra Mulic had 13 assists.
First Set - Both teams traded points to a 6-6 tie in the opening set before the Bloodhounds staged a 15-2 run, capped by a kill from Madison Reyes, as John Jay led 21-8. The Bulldogs registered three of the following four points, capped by an ace from Dionora Gomez. Lewis had two kills before Catan sealed the first-set win with a kill. The Bloodhounds hit .333 in the opening set while recording 16 kills.
Second Set - The two teams opened up the second set similarly to the first set, as the set was evened at 3-3 following an attack error by Olivia Fan. John Jay outscored Brooklyn, 10-7, to take a three-point lead following an ace from Kristin Gretener. The Bloodhounds closed out the set on a 12-5 run, as Emma Steele mishit giving the point to the Bloodhounds.
Third Set - In the third set, Brooklyn got on the board first while upping their lead to 6-2 following an attack error by Sadowitz. John Jay scored eight of the following 12 points, capped by a kill from Julia Stuart, knotting the score at 10-10. The run by the Bloodhounds continued, as the home team added to their lead on the heels of a 10-3 burst, increasing the lead to 20-13 following a kill from Lewis off the touch from Ellmedina Hodzic.
Brooklyn hung around with a 9-1 run, cutting the deficit to one, 23-22, on a kill from Rafat. A service error followed by a kill from Stuart sealed the victory for the Bloodhounds, who returned to the title game.
The Bloodhounds hit .202 for the match while limiting Brooklyn to just a .028
hitting percentage.
