Women's Basketball Outlasts Sarah Lawrence On The Road, 66-57, On Saturday Afternoon

Bronxville, NY - On Saturday afternoon, the John Jay women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as the Bloodhounds outlasted the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 66-57, at the Campbell Sports Center.

The Bloodhounds moved to 2-1 on the season, while the Gryphons fell to 1-3.

Ayanna Edwards led the way for the visitors, scoring a team-high 17 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field, with 7 of 8 coming from the free-throw line. Michaela Lattimore registered her second straight double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing a new career-high 16 caroms in her 25 minutes of action.

CUNYAC Player of the Week Ashley Zeolla netted 11 points while hitting on 7 of 10 from the free throw and grabbed seven rebounds in her 28 minutes of work. Newcomer Briana Minick scored 10 points, her first collegiate game scoring in double-figures.

Gabby Hudson led the Gryphons with 17 points and helped on the boards, finishing with eight. Kaila Dorch was the second Sarah Lawrence player to score double-figures, chipping in 12 and grabbing ten rebounds.

Lattimore got John Jay on the board first after finishing with the layup off the pass from Zeolla while drawing contact and completing the three-point play for a 3-0 lead. The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 7-2 lead following back-to-back baskets by Edwards. Sarah Lawrence utilized a 12-6 burst to claim a slim 14-13 lead just before the end of the first quarter following Hudson's pull-up jumper.  

Both teams had an inauspicious start to the second quarter, combing for just 17 total points in the stanza as they combined to go 7 of 25 from the field and 1 of 6 from three-point range. John Jay controlled the boards by a 13-7 margin, highlighted by a 5-1 count on the offensive glass. The contest was tied at 22, followed by a three by Audrey Mattison.

The Gryphons scored 10 of the first 16 points in the third quarter, with Ariana Spanopoulos laying it up for two off the feed from Hudson at the 6:07 mark as Sarah Lawrence led 32-28. Over the final six minutes, the Bloodhounds got back in the contest after hitting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line as Minick netted all ten points during this spurt with John Jay trailing 46-43.

To start the fourth quarter, Essence Richardson hit a floating jumper that closed the gap to one, 46-45. The Gryphons went ahead 52-49 on a triple from Spanopoulos. Lattimore hit one of two from the charity stripe before Alexis Jones hit a jumper with four minutes left, giving the lead back to John Jay.

The visitors made the most of their free-throw attempts down the stretch, as over the last 3:30, John Jay hit only 2 of 3 from the field but converted on a 9 of 13 from the line while limiting the home team to just 2 of 9 and 0 of 3 from long distance.

For the game, John Jay shot 35.0 percent from the field without making a shot from the outside (0 of 8). The Bloodhounds held a comfortable 53-36 margin in rebounds.

The women's team will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 19, as they welcome the University of Saint Joseph to The Doghouse.

Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
