Four Bloodhounds Score In Double-Figures To Lead Men's Basketball Past Washington College (MD) In Season Opener At 2024 Sarah Lawrence Academic Classic

Bronxville, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team opened up their 2024-25 season in resounding fashion, defeating Washington College (MD) 70-56 in the second game of the 2024 Sarah Lawrence Academic Classic.
In the first game, the host Gryphons edged out Bard, 66-63, in overtime.

Four Bloodhounds netted double-figures, with transfer Syl Granda netting a team-leading 16 points. The former Seton Hall member grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and swiped two steals in 25 minutes. Jamir Stewart contributed 13 points on an efficient 5 of 10 shooting from the floor in 26 minutes off the bench. Newcomers Keyshawn Miller added 12 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while teammate Richar Frias scored 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor.

Washington College (MD) had two players reach double-figures, led by Nolan Waldon, who scored 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field. Ty Woodland came within a rebound of a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds on 7 of 7 shooting from the field.

Nicho Simes put Washington College on the board first with a three-pointer before Miller buried a jumper for John Jay's first points of the season.

This sparked a 12-2 run by the Bloodhounds as they extended their lead to 14-5 following a corner triple from Isaac Holmes. During the two-minute burst, John Jay hit on 5 of 7 of their attempts while Waldon to a turnaround jumper at the 17:39 mark. The Shoremen responded with an 8-2 run, trimming the deficit to just two, 16-14, following a three-pointer from Woodland. 

The Bloodhounds pushed their lead to ten, 34-24, after outscoring Washington College, 18-10, over a 9:34 span. John Jay hit on 8 of 17 from the floor, with Stewart and Omar Calderon netting nine of the 18 points during the run. Ryan Lange and Woodland netted the half's final four points as the Shoremen trailed by six. Both teams shot 44 percent from the field despite John Jay being held to just 16.7 from long range.

Following the intermission, Holmes drilled a three-pointer off the feed from Evelyn as John Jay went ahead by nine, 37-28. Frias muscled for two at the 14:47 mark as John Jay took a 47-36 lead. The Shoremen rallied back, staging an 11-1 run of their own to get to within one, 48-47, after Precieux Tshibangu hit both attempts from the free throw line. The Bloodhounds built a 10-1 run, capped by a floating jumper from Granda that extended the lead to 58-48 at the 8:32 mark. 

Over the final seven minutes, John Jay outscored Washington College (MD) 12-8, with Granda netting four points, including one of two from the line with 1:05 remaining.

For the game, John Jay finished at 44.1 percent from the floor and 30.0 percent from three-point range. The Bloodhounds held a 32-31 edge on the glass, highlighted by an 11-6 mark on the offensive glass.

The Bloodhounds conclude the Academic Classic against the host Gryphons on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m.
