Men's Hoops Edged Out By FDU-Florham In The Closing Moments, 65-60, On Sunday Afternoon

Madison, NJ - Keyshawn Miller led John Jay (5-3) in scoring, matching his career-high with 20 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field while registering his second double-double of the season, pulling in a career-best 11 caroms but wasn't enough as the Bloodhounds were edged by the FDU Florham Devils, 65-60, on Sunday afternoon. Additionally, he added a steal and an assist in the contest, and continues to be ranked among the best in the nation, as his 3.29 steals per game is ranks ninth in all of Division III.

For the eighth straight game, Syl Granda scored in double-digits, finishing with 15 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field while corralling six rebounds, two steals, and a block in his 30 minutes of action.

Three Devils reached double-figures in scoring, led by Creek, who tallied 18 points on 5 of 11 shooting, including 3 of 4 marksmanship from three-point range and going a perfect 5 of 5 from the charity stripe in 29 minutes of work.

Woods added 11, 7 of which came from the line in nine chances while adding five rebounds in 24 minutes. Washington was the third FDU Florham player in double-digits, scoring 10.

The two teams traded points with the lead not exceeding three points, as Emmanuel Adenekan banked in a layup at the 12:03 mark of the first half, giving John Jay a 13-10 lead.

Over the next six minutes, John Jay outscored FDU Florham, 13-7, in building a 26-20, capped by a Stewart layup off the pass from Miller with 3:27 left to go before halftime.

The Devils closed out the first half on a 9-3 run, holding the Bloodhounds to just one field goal attempt while hitting on 4 of 9 over the three-minute run as the teams entered the break tied at 29 following a Jamal Santana layup.

John Jay hit 47.8 percent in the opening half (11 of 23) while holding FDU Florham to just 36.7 percent. The Bloodhounds struggled from the outside, converting just 2 of 9 in the opening 20 minutes, while the Devils hit on 5 of 14 (35.7 percent). The Bloodhounds held a slim 16-12 advantage on the boards.

The Devils opened up with two straight buckets to take a 33-29 lead before Granda dialed up a three-pointer to stifle the FDU burst.

The Bloodhounds scored seven of the following 11 points, with Jeremiah Cardi hitting a jumper at 12:59, giving John Jay a 39-37 lead.

The Devils staged a 13-5 run in taking a 50-44 lead as Angel Smith hit on a jumper after securing the offensive rebound with 8:25 left in regulation.

Miller was John Jay's catalyst during their comeback attempt, as the visitors trailed by one, 53-52, with 4:43 as Miller netted six of the eight points.

Jordan Evelyn hit on two from the line, knotting the game at 54 before Woods completed the conventional three-point play from the line, giving FDU a 57-54 advantage.

Miller continued to spark John Jay's offense, hitting on a layup at the 2:43 mark that trimmed the deficit to one, 57-56. Another jumper by Miller with 1:41 left inched John Jay closer before the visitors took the lead, 60-59, on two free throws by Stewart. 

Woods was fouled and made both from the line, as FDU-Florham claimed a 61-60 lead with 29 seconds left. On the ensuing Bloodhound possession, Miller missed on a contested layup and committed his final foul of the contest, sending Washington to the line with ten seconds. Washington proceeded to hit both shots.

The Bloodhounds raced up the court as Omar Calderon fired a three-pointer on the wing in front of his bench but missed fired on the attempt. 
Evelyn fouled Creek, who put the game away by hitting from the line as the Bloodhounds' two-game win streak was snapped.

For the game, John Jay shot 40.0 percent from the floor (22 of 55) while holding FDU to 33.3 (21 of 63). The Bloodhounds only hit on 3 of 17 from the outside, while the Devils connected on 30.4 percent from the outside (7 of 23).

The Bloodhounds won the battle on the boards, 43-32. John Jay forced 18 turnovers and turned FDU's mishaps into 24 points while scoring 36 points in the paint.

John Jay continues their road trip on Wednesday, heading to St. Joseph's University -Brooklyn for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
