Women's Basketball Drops Final Home Contest Of 2024 To Houghton On Saturday Afternoon

Three Bloodhounds score in double-figures first-ever meeting between the two schools

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team had three players score in double-figures but fell to the visiting Houghton University Highlanders, 82-55, on Saturday afternoon at The Doghouse.

Saturday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Sophomore forward Michaela Lattimore led the way with 15 points while grabbing five rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Senior Ashley Zeolla netted 12 points, hitting on 6 of 9 from the free-throw line while also grabbing five rebounds. 

Junior guard Essence Richardson was the third Bloodhound to score in double-figures, finishing with a season-high 11 points on 4 of 9 shooting while hitting 3 of 6 from the outside. The Bronx, NY native grabbed four rebounds, two steals, and had an assist in 23 minutes of action.

Houghton had two players reach double-figures, led by Kayla Camacho, who scored a game-high 24 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field and 4 of 8 from three-point distance. Camacho added eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Tabitha DeVries was the second Highlander to score in double-digits, finishing with ten on 5 of 11 shooting display. Tricia Carmer pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, six coming on the offensive end.

he visiting Highlanders opened the game on a 12-4 run, connecting on 5 of 11 from the field while limiting the Bloodhounds' offense to just two made field goals in the first four minutes of the contest. DeVries led the way for Houghton with six points during the run. The Bloodhounds started to gain some rhythm from the free-throw line in the later stages of the period, going 5 of 5 from the charity stripe and trailed 22-11 following a pair of freebies made by Edwards. 

Houghton used an 8-4 spurt from the end of the first quarter to increase their lead to 30-15 following a layup from Camacho at the 6:24 mark of the second quarter. Lattimore stopped the run with her seventh point of the contest off the pass from Edwards. Camacho hit a three-pointer with 5:07 remaining before halftime before the Bloodhounds mounted a comeback. Alexis Jones hit a floating jump shot that ignited a 10-2 run to get down to ten, 37-27, as Simonds hit a pair from the line.

John Jay went 3 of 5 from the field during their near 4:30 run while holding the Highlanders to just a 1 of 9 from the field and a 0-7 from three-point range. Dening halted the run with a triple off the pass from LaCrosse as Houghton led 40-27 heading into the break. For the first half, the Bloodhounds shot 36.4 percent from the field, while Houghton converted 38.1 percent from the field, hitting 8 of 24 from three-point range.The visiting Highlanders held a 27-15 edge on the board in the first half while capitalizing on the offensive glass at 13-1.

John Jay opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run, with Lattimore hitting on one of two from the line that trimmed the deficit down to eight, 40-32. Houghton responded by scoring six of the following seven points in taking a 46-33 lead. 


Following a John Jay timeout, Zeolla muscled her way into the paint for two for her ninth point of the contest. Richardson put in back-to-back baskets for the Bloodhounds, a left-wing three-pointer before banking in two in the paint. The two traded points over the next 3:20 before Camacho hit a three-pointer to push the Houghton lead to 62-42.

Starting the fourth quarter, the two clubs traded points before Houghton staged a 15-8 over the final six minutes in preserving the victory. 

The Bloodhounds shot 31.6 percent from the field for the game, while Houghton converted on 45.7 percent of their shots. The Highlanders won the battle of the boards, 49-34. John Jay hit 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (16 of 24), while Houghton only went to the line nine times. 

The Bloodhounds will have time off for the holidays before returning to the court on December 30 when they travel to Patchogue, NY, to tangle with St. Joseph's University - Long Island.

Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
