Late Comeback By Men's Hoops Not Enough As Bloodhounds Fall To CCNY, 75-67, On Saturday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team trailed the CCNY Beavers by 16 points six minutes into the second half but the resilient Bloodhounds ignited a tenacious 20-8 run over the next seven minutes to cut it to four, 63-59, but it wasn't enough as John Jay fell, 75-67, on Saturday afternoon. 
 
John Jay (6-18; 2-11 CUNYAC) had four players score in double-figures, led by Garrison Watkins, who tallied a game-high 24 points on an efficient 11 of 17 shooting display from the field. The Staten Island native notched his 18th career double-double (8th of the season) as he corralled a team-high ten caroms. He continued to fill up the stat sheet while playing the full forty minutes, as she dished out three assists, two steals, and added a block. 
 
Jamir Stewart tallied 14 points on the night while recording four steals in the process. Jordan Evelyn contributed 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds and matching Stewart with four steals. Adrian Kopec chipped in ten points off the bench. 
 
CCNY (17-7; 10-3 CUNYAC) had five players conclude the afternoon scoring in double-digits, led by Yassine Sakhi, who scored 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Ricardo Dixon dropped 14 points on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting display. Jordan Williams and Edward Beqiri each netted 12 points, respectively, on a combined 9 of 20 from the field with Beqiri recording a double-double, finishing with 12 rebounds in the win. Justin Morety added ten points 
 
Both teams traded baskets in the opening portion of the contest before the visitors staged a mini 8-2 run over ninety seconds to double up the score to 14-7. Stewart found the shooter's touch on a jumper that stifled the CCNY run and started a 6-2 burst for the Bloodhounds, cutting the lead to 16-13 following a Watkins layup.
 
The Beavers outscored the Bloodhounds, 11-6, over the next 6:44 in upping their advantage to 27-19, as both teams struggled to find their range, combing on 7 of 24 shooting from the field. CCNY closed out the half scoring 13 of the final 20 points in the frame to take a 14-point lead, 40-26. 
 
CCNY claimed their largest lead of the contest, 55-39, at the 13:15 mark, following a jumper from Ricardo Dixon. A steal by Stewart commenced the comeback attempt, as the Bloodhounds staged a 20-8 run of their, own that started with Kopec triple and was capped by an Evelyn layup at the 5:57 mark, with John Jay trailing 63-59. 
 
During the run, the Bloodhounds converted on 8 of 14 from the field, as Watkins and Kopec combined to net 14 of the 20 points while limiting the Beavers to just a 4 of 10 showing during the run. Sakhi halted the run with a layup as CCNY went up 65-59. 
 
John Jay continued to claw back in the contest, as they scored six of the next ten points, with Evelyn hitting a jumper that once again brought the Bloodhounds to within four, 69-65, with three minutes left to play in regulation. 
 
On the ensuing Beavers possession, Beqiri missed the layup and was able to tip-in his miss, pushing the CCNY lead to six, 71-65. Dixon missed the front end of a one-and-one and Watkins secured the rebound, but turned the ball over on a mistimed pass. 
 
The Beavers sealed the game as Chris Stone converted two more free-throws with 18 seconds left as CCNY secured their eighth straight win. 
 
John Jay shot close to 40.0 percent for the game (25 of 63) while CCNY hit on close to 50.0 percent (30 of 62). The Beavers held a 44-34 on the boards, sparked by a 35-28 edge on the defensive glass. 
 
The men's basketball team closes out the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, February 13 as the Bloodhounds welcome the Medgar Evers College Cougars on Senior Night. 
 
Tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m.
