Women's Basketball Victorious Over Medgar Evers On Senior Night On Wednesday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team posted a wire-to-wire home triumph, 72-47, over the Medgar Evers College Cougars on Senior Night from The Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, the Bloodhounds move to 17-7 and 11-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while Medgar Evers falls to 7-13 and 4-10 in league play.
Coach's Corner – Head Coach Lynda Day
"Tonight, we finished our regular season at home with a great send off for our seniors. All three seniors (Tiffany Bogle, Hannah Ruberto, and Kamryn Hammond) showed their senior leadership, both on and off the court. We look forward to being back home (at The Doghouse) one more time to host the semifinals of the CUNYAC playoffs next week."
Four Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by graduate guard Kamryn Hammond, who netted 16 points on 5 of 16 from the field while collecting six rebounds, six assists and three steals in 29 minutes. Ayanna Edwards scored 14 points on an efficient 5 of 10 shooting from the floor while she grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and swiped three steals.

Senior Tiffany Bogle contributed 12 point while also hitting on 5 of 10 from the floor in her 24 minutes of action. Fellow Senior Night honoree Hannah Ruberto scored a season-high 10 points while concluding the contest with eight rebounds, a career-high six assists and three blocks in the victory.

Mariame Gueye paced Medgar Evers with 16 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the floor. Sheily Quezada chipped in nine points while filling up the stat sheet, grabbing six caroms, swatting four shots, and adding a steal for the visitors.

The Bloodhounds opened the contest on a 7-0 run as Bogle capped the spurt with a patented mid-range jumper off the feed from Hammond. Gueye halted the run with the Cougars first point of the contest on a layup at the 6:38 mark. The layup by Gueye gave the visitors momentum, as they outscored the Bloodhounds, 6-3, over the next 1:07, cutting the deficit down to two, 10-8, following a three-pointer from Gueye.

John Jay responded with six of the next seven points, as Hammond converted on a pair from the free-throw line that pushed the Bloodhounds' advantage to 16-9. A 6-0 response by the Cougars brought them to within one, 16-15, as Bryanna Merger drilled one from three-point range, concluding the scoring for the first quarter. Both teams shot over 30.0 percent from the field in the opening frame but Medgar Evers found their rhythm from three-point distance, hitting on 4 of 5 from the outside.

The Bloodhounds commenced the second quarter on a 9-4 run over the first four minutes of the frame, as John Jay led 25-19 following a left-handed jumper by Edwards off Hammond's fourth assist of the night. The visitors answered back with six straight points to tie the game at 25 following a jumper by Natala Reid-Small, but quickly answered with Bogle, as she drew the contact and completed the traditional three-point play from the line.

John Jay finished the second quarter on a 14-6 run that spanned nearly five minutes as they held a 39-31 halftime lead. Bogle served as the catalyst, scoring six of the 14 points while the Bloodhounds, as a whole, shot 5 of 8 from the field during that span. In the quarter, the Bloodhounds converted on 52.9 percent from the floor (9 of 17) despite being outrebounded 13-7 by the visitors, and 13-7 on the offensive end.

The home team opened the third quarter on a 14-8 run that increased their lead to 53-39 after Ashley Zeolla converted on her seventh point of the evening. The Bloodhounds tallied six of the final nine points, with Hammond hitting a jumper just before the buzzer sounded for the conclusion of the third quarter. John Jay held Medgar Evers to just 2 of 13 shooting in the third quarter (15.4 percent) while hitting on close to 40.0 percent from the field themselves (7 of 18).

Edwards drilled a left-wing three-pointer to commence the final quarter for her 14th point of the evening as Ruberto was credited with her fifth dime as the lead increased to 62-42. Sarah Granados finished the scoring for the Bloodhounds, as the Bloodhounds concluded the game with a 10-5 run for their 17th victory of the season and their tenth home win of the season.

This marks the third straight season in which the Bloodhounds, under head coach Lynda Day, have notched double-digit wins at home, as her teams are 32-9 over the last three seasons.

The Bloodhounds conclude the 2023-24 regular season on Thursday, February 15, as they will travel to Jamaica, NY to tangle with the York College Cardinals. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
