Men's Basketball Falters At Home Against Brooklyn On Saturday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 14-point halftime margin as the Bloodhounds dropped Saturday's CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tilt to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 77-54, at The Doghouse.

With the result, John Jay stands at 6-16 overall and 2-9 in league contest while the Bulldogs improve to 5-17 and 5-6 in conference play.

Jordan Evelyn was the lone Bloodhound to score in double-figures on the afternoon as the Hempstead, NY native tallied a team-high 14 points. He filled up the stat sheet in his 30 minutes of action, grabbing seven rebounds, recording two steals, while adding an assist and a block. Garrison Watkins, who was recognized prior to the start of the contest for scoring his 1,000th career point back against Medgar Evers on January 19, corralled a team-leading nine caroms in his 36 minutes of action.

Three Bulldogs finished in double-figures, led by Malik Dale, who notched a game-high 30 points on 12 of 21 shooting from the field, which included a 6 of 13 display from three-point range in his 36 minutes of play. Altin Kujak netted 13 points while securing a team-leading seven rebounds. AJ Ahmed rounded out the double-digit scoring performances for the visitors and ended with 11 points while collecting six rebounds and dishing out four rebounds.

The Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with baskets from Isaac Holmes and Daniel Reyes before Brooklyn erupted on a 22-2 run over the next 7:20 in orchestrating a 22-6 lead. The Bulldogs held the Bloodhounds without a made field goal during this run while hitting on 10 of 15 from the floor as Dale scored 12 of his 30 over this span. John Jay spun a 6-0 run of their own after Reyes completed the traditional three-point play from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn outscored John Jay, 11-7, over the final 5:30 in posting a 33-19 halftime advantage. The Bloodhounds were held to just seven made field goals despite going 5 of 8 from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs, who didn't attempt a free throw in the opening half, were outrebounded by one by the Bloodhounds, 21-20.

The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 16-6 run to elevate the lead to 49-25 following a three-pointer from Dale. Omar Calderon cut the run after driving the middle of the lane off the feed from Jeremiah Cardi
The Bloodhounds scored nine of the next 11 points in 4:34 minutes as Evelyn drew the foul while banking his shot off the window to cap the John Jay run, trailing 51-34, at the 9:48 mark. Over the final 9:47, Brooklyn scored 26 of the 46 points in preserving the double-digit win and taking the season series from the Bloodhounds.
