Men's Volleyball Outlasts Brooklyn In Five Sets For Third Straight Win On Saturday Afternoon

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team trailed two sets to one to Brooklyn College before rallying in the fourth set and coming away with a 15-11 win in the deciding set as the Bloodhounds outlasted the Bulldogs, 3-2 (25-16; 22-25; 22-25; 25-21; 15-11). 
 
With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Bulldogs fall to 7-12 and 3-6 in league play. 
 
Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo registered a career-high 40 assists while recording nine digs and a kill. Logan Ramos notched his fifth double-double of the season, concluding the contest with 14 kills and 15 digs. 
 
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson recorded a team-high 16 kills while tallying three blocks and two digs. Jeferson Avila-Macancela also had a double-double, posting 13 kills and 11 digs. Micah Rossman added a team-best 21 digs on the afternoon. 
 
Aaron Siu paced Brooklyn with a team-high 24 kills while adding 14 digs. Jiaian Flanders notched nine kills and two digs. Alvaro Gonzalez posted a team-high 17 digs in the match. 
 
First Set - The Bloodhounds opened the set on a 5-1, capped by a kill from Avila. John Jay extended their advantage to 15-9 following an attack error from Siu. Avila recorded back-to-back kills to seal the set as John Jay earned the 25-16 first-set triumph. The Bloodhounds hit .314 in the opening set, posting a total of 14 kills. 
 
Second Set - The two teams traded points for much of the early portion of the second set until the Bloodhounds took an 11-8 lead following an attack error from Flanders. The Bulldogs staged a 15-8 run to take a 23-19 lead following a kill from Flanders. Ramos recorded a kill from Maxwell Law. Gonzalez Verdejo recorded an ace, that brought John Jay to within one, 23-22, before a kill from Siu and an attack error put Brooklyn on the board. 
 
Third Set - Similar to the second set, the two teams exchanged points before the Bloodhounds created space, taking an 8-4 lead as Steven Ajazi recorded the kill following a Brooklyn timeout. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-3 run, capped by an ace from Flanders as they took a 13-11 advantage. Two straight points by John Jay knotted the set at 13-13 before Brooklyn closed out the set on a 12-9 spurt, taking a 2-1 lead in the match. The Bulldogs hit .273 during the set. 
 
Fourth Set - Brooklyn opened the fourth set with a 4-2 lead before a kill from Barriffe-Johnson and an ace from Ramos evened the set. The Bulldogs took a 12-9 lead on a kill from Siu. The Bloodhounds staged their rally, finishing the set on a 16-9 run as Flanders mishit securing the win for John Jay, forcing a fifth and deciding set. 
 
Fifth Set - The two traded points until Ajazi recorded two straight kills that gave John Jay an 8-6 lead. Ramos recorded a kill that made it 9-7 and added another that pushed the advantage to 10-8. Barriffe-Johnson posted two kills that upped the John Jay lead to 13-10 before Avila sealed the win with a kill off the set from Gonzalez Verdejo. In the final set, the Bloodhounds hit .429 while recording one attack error. 
 
John Jay will look for their fourth straight victory on Tuesday, March 19 as they welcome Medgar Evers to The Doghouse. 
 
First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
