Men's Volleyball Splits CUNYAC Tri-Match Against Brooklyn And Hunter On Saturday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball earned a split in their CUNYAC Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 3-0, before falling to Hunter College, 3-0, in the last match of the day. 
 
The Hawks defeated Brooklyn, 3-0, as well to finish 2-0 on the day. 
 
John Jay 3, Brooklyn 0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-16)
The Bloodhounds outlasted the Bulldogs in the first set, 28-26, and built of that momentum in recording the shutout of their cross-borough rivals. 
 
Micah Rossman led the way with 14 kills in the opening match while Kyle Barriffe-Johnson added seven kills 
 
Alex Bridgelall recorded a double-double, finishing the match with 27 assists and 12 digs. Steven Ajazi had two service aces to pace the Bloodhounds. 
 
Aaron Siu paced Brooklyn with 10 kills and 10 digs while Tommy Min produced a team-leading 12 digs in the contest. David Lema notched 25 assists. 
 
First Set - The two teams traded off points before a kill from Siu gave Brooklyn a 9-6 lead. John Jay rallied back to record the next four points in one-point lead, 10-9, after an attack error from Siu. 
 
Brooklyn used a 7-4 spurt to take a 16-14 lead following an attack error by Stephen Daly. Rossman killed the Bulldogs rally to get the home team to within one, 16-15. 
 
The visitors scored six of the next 11 points as Jason Lin served up an ace that made it 22-20 in favor of Brooklyn. John Jay rallied back, getting two straight points to tie the set at 22. 
 
Facing set point, Rossman recorded his 14th kill of the set that evened the set at 25-25. A service error by Rossman gave Brooklyn set point, but the relentless Bloodhounds were able to record a kill to tie at 26 before Ajazi posted an ace and Logan Ramos clinched the set on a kill. 
 
Second Set -  The two teams opened the second set in similar fashion to the first set, trading points before the Bloodhounds took a 7-5 lead on a bad set from Omar Shawki. 
 
Brooklyn trimmed the deficit down to 9-7 before a 5-1 run by John Jay increase their lead to 14-8. The Bulldogs wasted little time in responding, staging a 6-1 run of their own to trail by one, 15-14, on a service error from Ramos. 
 
John Jay closed the set on a 10-4 burst, capped by another kill from Rossman as the Bloodhounds went ahead 2-0 in the match. 
 
Third Set - John Jay and Brooklyn continued exchanging points in the early portion of the set before the Bloodhounds utilized a 9-4 run that put them ahead, 13-9, after a kill from Rossman from Evan Wandersee
 
The Bloodhounds scored ten of the 14 points, highlighted by seven straight scores, all starting from a kill from Sebastian Rodriguez and capped with an attack error as Barriffe-Johnson held serve for six of the seven points. 
 
Bridgelall killed the rally to setup match point before Matthew Vong closed out the match with a kill as the Bloodhounds earned the win. 
 
John Jay 0, Hunter 3 (21-25, 21-25, 23-25)
Against the Hawks, Barriffe-Johnson led the way with 12 kills while Ramos had nine and Jeferson Avila-Macancela had eight. 
 
Rossman paced the club with 11 digs while Bridgelall notched 30 assists against the Hawks. 
 
Kyle Foley recorded a team-high 16 kills for the Hawks while Nick Yao registered a team-best 14 digs. Cooper Moran produced 35 assists in leading Hunter to a 3-0 sweep of the Bloodhounds. 
 
First Set- The Bloodhounds broke a 5-5 stalemate in taking an 8-5 lead on an attack error by Jimmy Chang.
 
Hunter outscored John Jay 10-4 to go up 15-12 following a kill from Foley. The Bloodhounds got to within one, 16-15, on a kill from Ramos, but Hunter responded with a 7-1 run, increasing their lead to 23-16. 
 
The Bloodhounds continued to fight back, scoring four straight points before Foley recorded the kill, giving the Hawks a 25-21 first set triumph. 
 
Second Set- Hunter opened the second set rallying to a 6-4 lead following a kill from Foley. Barriffe-Johnson knotted the set at 10-10 with a kill. 
 
The Hawks used a 9-2 run in taking a 19-12 lead as Foley recorded back-to-back aces to give the visitors a seven point advantage. 
 
John Jay continued to fight back in the contest, closing the gap to just four, 19-15, following Bridgelall's second consecutive ace. 
 
Hunter halted the Bloodhounds' comeback efforts, after John Jay rattled off three straight points to get to within three, 23-20, but Foley produced the final two kills for the Hawks as Hunter went ahead in the overall match, 2-0. 
 
Third Set- The Bloodhounds narrowly extended the match to a fourth set before falling by two, 25-23. 
 
John Jay withstood an early 12-7 advantage by the Hawks following a Moran ace. The Bloodhounds rattled off three straight points in closing the gap to 13-11 as Barriffe-Johnson recorded another kill. 
 
Two straight kills from Ted Kim pushed Hunter's lead to 15-11 but the momentum fueled by John Jay lifted them to five straight points and a 16-15 lead, highlighted by a Ramos ace. 
 
Hunter reclaimed the lead with three straight points of their own, making it 18-16 following an attack error. 
 
The back-and-forth play continued as the Bloodhounds found themselves trailing by one again, 22-21, as Daly posted an ace. 
 
With match point in sight, Avila and Barriffe-Johnson halted the final point to get John Jay to one, 24-23, but a Kim kill from Moran gave Hunter the shutout win. 
 
The Bloodhounds hit the road on Tuesday, March 5 as they will take on Medgar Evers at 7:00 p.m. in Brooklyn.
