Softball Takes Two From Sarah Lawrence On Tuesday Afternoon

Bronxville, NY - The John Jay softball clubbed a total of 36 hits between Tuesday's doubleheader as the Bloodhounds bested Sarah Lawrence, 21-0 and 22-2. 
 
John Jay moves to 6-4 on the season while the Gryphons remain without a win at 0-6.

The Bloodhounds opened up the twinbill, scoring four runs in the first before sending a total of 16 batters to the plate in the second inning, as John Jay posted 13 runs in the frame that led to the five-inning, 21-0 run-rule triumph.
 
Rylea Sandel went 4 for 5 with four runs scored and drove in three RBIs. The reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, Jailene Santiago, continued her torrid offensive stretch, going 3 for 3, with three runs scored, clubbing two home runs and driving in a career-high 9 RBIs. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy finished 2 for 3, matching Sandel with a team-high four runs scored while driving in four RBIs herself. 
 
Ciaran Iglesias (2-2) earned her second win the season, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out seven batters. Her counterpart, Isabella Zuniga, was saddled with the loss. 
 
Anna Brand and Heather Yung each produced a hit for Sarah Lawrence in the first game. 
 
Gallaspy got things started with a walk before moving to second on a base hit from Sandel. The next batter, Santiago, connected on a three-run home run, the first on the day for the Albany, NY native, as the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Santiago's fourth home run of the season. 
 
John Jay wasn't done as Angelina Schoelles doubled to left center and scored on the Kelly Fajardo single to right center, making it a 4-0 advantage for the Bloodhounds. 
 
The visitors found their rhythm at the plate. Elika Rodrigues worked a one-out walk before two successful steals moved her to third. Gallaspy connected on her second home run of the year, pushing the lead to 6-0. 
 
Sandel added another base hit before Santiago connected on her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to center that increased the margin to 8-0. 
 
Kayla Sauers, Schoelles, and Fajardo each had hits with Fajardo's single to right plating Sauers to make it 9-0. Sidney Bankston connected on a RBI single to left that continued the scoring, 10-0. 
 
Iglesias reached on a fielding error by the catcher that plated two more. The offense continued to be in sync, as Rodrigues reached on a base hit to left before Gallapsy drew a walk. 
 
Sandel singled to left center that made it 13-0. Santiago stepped in for her third at-bat and uncorked a grand-slam, which made it 17-0 and knocked Zuniga from the circle. 
 
In the top of the third, Joeglys Sanchez singled to right and moved to second as Bankston reached on a E6. Two batters later, Gallapsy ripped a double to right center that plated both Bankston and Sanchez. 
 
The final scores came off the bat of Sandel, as she connected on her first round-tripper of the new year as the Bloodhounds continued to add to their lead. 
 
Game 2 | John Jay 22, Sarah Lawrence 2
The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into the second game, posting a ten-spot in the first inning before ending the game with nine runs over the fourth and fifth in taking the nightcap, 22-2. 
 
Lindsay Ogden pitched the five innings, earning her second win of the season as she allowed two runs on two hits, walked four but struck out a season-high 11 batters. 
 
Santiago added to her totals, going 4 for 5 with two runs scored and driving in six RBIs. Rodrigues finished the contest 3 for 4 with five runs scored and drove in five RBIs. 
 
Ogden helped her cause at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and producing three RBIs. 
 
Kristin Vargas led Sarah Lawrence with both hits. 
 
Rodrigues led off the contest with a single to right and advanced to second on interference before stealing third. Gallaspy walked before Sandel drove in Rodrigues for the first run of the game.  Santiago added to her RBI total, sending a hard-hit single to short, plating Gallaspy to make it 2-0. The next batter, Sauers, reached on an infield single to the pitch as Sandel came across, upping the lead to 3-0. 
 
Ogden cleared the bases with a single to right-center. doubling the John Jay lead to 6-0. A walk to Rodrigues gave the Bloodhounds two runners on before Gallaspy sent an RBI double, scoring Ogden. 
 
Sandel reached on an error by the shortstop that plated two more runners, making it 9-0 before Santiago plated her second RBI of the frame on a single to center, as John Jay went up 10-0. 
 
The Gryphons scored their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the first on a passed ball. 
 
In the second inning, the bats continued to stay hot for the visitors, as Schoelles led off the inning with a double to center before moving to third on a wild pitch. Iglesias doubled to left center, bringing in Schoelles for the 11th run of the contest. 
 
Rodrigues pelted a two-run home run to left field that made it 13-1 in favor of the Bloodhounds on her first of the season. 
 
Sarah Lawrence got a run back in their half of the second, scoring on a wild pitch. 
 
Following a scoreless third inning, John Jay went back to work, sparking a five-run inning that saw the lead swell to 18-2. Rodrigues clubbed her second two-run home run that pushed the lead to 15-2. 
 
A few batters later, Santiago doubled in Sandel and Sanchez, extending the lead to 16-2. Miranda Perez came on as a pinch-hitter and roped a two-run single to center field, making it 18-2 in favor of John Jay. 
 
The Bloodhounds finished the scoring with four runs in the top of the fifth, as Santiago continued her hot-hitting from the plate, connecting on her fourth home run of the day and third of game two, this one a three-run blast. 
 
The softball team will be home this week, as they will host Cedar Crest at Cougar Softball Field in Union, NJ on the campus of Kean University. 
 
First-pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
