New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team returned to The Doghouse Thursday night for another CUNYAC match, this time against the Baruch Bearcats.
The one versus three battle in the CUNYAC standouts was competitive throughout, with the Bearcats taking the win in three sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bloodhounds got the best of the visiting Bearcats in the opening points, taking a 3-1 lead on a pair of swings by
Logan Ramos and
Jeferson Avila-Macancela.
A pair of attack errors and service errors by the hosts swung the advantage back in the direction of the Bearcats, 8-5.
The Baruch lead was never higher than three points throughout the set with the Bloodhounds using seven Baruch service errors to keep pace. Ramos was integral to the attack for John Jay, accounting for four kills and two aces as the hosts closed the gap.
Trailing 20-17, the Bloodhounds had a run ready.
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson showed his strength from the middle and started a 4-1 run that was capped by Avila-Macancela acing Baruch to tied the match at 21-all.
John Jay's attack had an answer for nearly every from there, dropping a point and tying the set again four times as the opening stanza pushed past 25 points for each side.
The Baruch hitters were the difference in the closing points, as Jack Centeno and Juancarlos Henriquez swung for kills on back-to-back points, earning the Bearcats a 27-25 win.
Both sides settled into the match after a frantic opening set, with neither team hitting below .290 and combining for just nine total attack errors.
Two of the Bearcats four attack errors helped the Bloodhounds take the substantive lead of the match, with John Jay coming back from trailing by one to lead 10-7.
Baruch's hitters were up to the task, rifling off three consecutive kills to retake a 12-11 lead.
Ramos's work from the outside twice gave the Bloodhounds a lead but Baruch's attack ended the set on a 7-3 run to score a 25-21 win in the second set.
The Bloodhounds came into the deciding third set looking for an early edge. Holding off a long rally early in the third set,
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson was strong at the net with his first block of the frame on Ari Osmanaj to give his side a 4-2 lead.
After drawing even, the Bearcats pushed ahead with six consecutive points behind attack errors. They lead 15-7 and forced a Bloodhound timeout.
John Jay's lineup could not reign in the deficit, falling 25-14 in the third set.
Logan Ramos and
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson were the Bloodhounds' offense drivers in the CUNYAC battle. Ramos logged 10 kills for the fourth time this season, adding two aces and seven digs.
Barriffe-Johnson finished with seven kills and two solo blocks.
