New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team capped the regular season on a high note Tuesday night with a sweep over the York College Cardinals.
Tuesday's win marks nine straight over the Cardinals.
Prior to the three-set victory, the Bloodhounds recognized their six senior student-athletes:
Jeferson Avila-Macancela,
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson,
Alex Bridgelall,
Stephen Daly and
Akashdeep Singh.
Set One: John Jay 25, York 7
Head coach
Austin Voges sent out an all senior starting lineup, with
Sebastian Rodriguez as libero, to start against the Cardinals.
The new look group found their rhythm quickly, hitting .684 in the set with 13 kills on 19 attempts. Barriffe-Johnson slid to the outside in the match, scoring his most kills in a three-set match this season with 15 total. John Jay never trailed in the opening set, hitting its best run with five consecutive points behind two aces from Daly.
The Bloodhounds went attack error-free in the first set, committing just two service errors.
Set Two: John Jay 25, York 23
The Cardinals played a much more competitive second set by taking advantage of 12 combined service and attack errors by John Jay - the Bloodhounds' highest total of the game.
Despite the mistakes, the Bloodhounds put together their biggest lead of the set when Bridgelall and Barriffe-Johnson combined for two aces and three kills respectively to give their side a 16-10 advantage.
York's bright spot in the match, David Heyliger, Jr., found his swing late in the match and recorded five kills in seven points to pull his team within one point of the lead. A trio of blocking errors would give York its lone significant lead of the match, 22-21. Barriffe-Johnson made up for those errors on the block with three consecutive kills to ensure a second set win.
Set Three: John Jay 25, York 18
John Jay played its third libero of the match when Avila-Macancela donned the blue jersey after
Evan Wandersee in the second, with
Micah Rossman plugging in as an outside hitter.
The group jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Heyliger, Jr. helped York pull to within one for the second straight set, trailing 10-11. A match-high six Cardinal attack errors were their undoing, pushing the Bloodhound lead to 16-11 just a few points later.
Barriffe-Johnson capped off a strong offensive outing with a rare service ace on set point, just his ninth this season. The senior finished the night with 16.0 points in three sets; totaling 15 kills, one ace and one assist.
Daly logged three aces in the win, just the third this season the senior has logged at least that many aces in a match.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds close the regular season with a 16-7 record and 9-5 record in conference play. John Jay is tentatively slated as the three seed in the CUNYAC Championships and host six-seed CCNY on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 6:00 p.m.
