New York, NY - For the third consecutive season, the John Jay men's volleyball team is headed to the CUNYAC Tournament Semifinals.
The three-seed Bloodhounds advanced through the quarterfinals on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over the six-seed City College of New York (CCNY) Beavers. The win elevates the team to a 17-10 record for the year, marking two consecutive seasons with at least that many victories.
Logan Ramos matched his best postseason offensive output in the win, finishing the three-set match with 12 kills on a .346 hitting percentage.
Set One: John Jay 25 - CCNY 17
The John Jay attack was in sync from the opening point as
Kyle Barriffe-Johnson logged the first two of his ten kills for the match to help give the Bloodhounds an early 6-2 lead.
CCNY was held to single digit points late into the first set, managing just four kills and totaling five attack errors. Jefferson Avila-Macancela helped push the Bloodhound advantage, 18-8, to double digits with two of his four first-set kills.
John Jay's troubles behind the back line added up down the stretch, recording eight service errors in the opening stanza and allowing CCNY to pull within two points, 21-23, late in the set. The Bloodhound attack stood tall despite the mistakes and Barriffe-Johnson secured the first set winner 25-21 with his fourth kill of the set.
The Bloodhounds recorded their best hitting set of the match in the first set, overwhelming the Beavers with 13 kills on 25 attempts (.435 hitting percentage).
Set Two: John Jay 25 - CCNY 10
CCNY's offensive challenges continued into the second set, racking up 10 attack errors.
Steven Ajazi matched a season-high with two service aces in the opening service rotation to help give the home team a 5-1 lead.
Logan Ramos and Avila-Macancela picked up kills in a 9-0 run for the Bloodhounds to put them ahead, 17-3. Ramos and Barriffe-Johnson led the offensive push down the stretch with two aces by setter
Alex Bridgelall capped a 25-10 set victory.
Set Three: John Jay 25 - CCNY 22
A fresh crop of Bloodhounds earned their playoff reps in the final set as the three seed looked to close out the opening round of the CUNYAC Tournament with a sweep. The John Jay attack was busy at the net, attempting a match-high 47 attacks and securing a match-high 17 kills, but the new look group would struggle with consistency in the final set.
CCNY nearly led up to the halfway point of the third set, taking advantage of ten attack errors by the Bloodhounds. After shedding his typical blue libero jersey for white one and subbing to the outside,
Micah Rossman lead the team with six kills in the third set. Two of those six kills bookended a a 4-0 run that gave the Bloodhounds their first lead of the third set, 18-15. Rossman was later set by three different teammates on three consecutive points, securing a kill in all three to extend the John Jay lead to 21-17.
Just as he did in the previous two sets, Barriffe-Johnson was there to secure the win in the decisive third set with a 25-22 win.
Ramos led all players with 12 kills and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine on the night. Barriffe-Johnson closed with match-high marks in hitting percentage among players with at least 10 attacks (.471) and three service aces.
