Women's Volleyball Blanks Drew In Straight Sets For Second Straight Win

Madison, NJ - Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Julia Stuart has a team-high 12 kills to lead John Jay to their second straight win, sweeping Drew 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 5-1 on the season while the Rangers falter to 1-6.

Josanne Lewis added 10 kills and seven digs. Newly minted CUNYAC Player of the Week, Meghan Smith, recorded a double-double, finishing with 31 assists, 14 digs and posted a team-best four blocks. Kristin Gretener added eight digs and four aces.


Genevieve Sarinelli led the way for Drew with 12 digs. Teeya Desgoutte, Emily Shirk, and Marissa Guajardo each had four kills. Alyssa Rachwal had a team-high 11 assists.


First Set -
The visiting Bloodhounds found themselves trailing 5-2 following an ace by Sarinelli. John Jay rallied with three straight points, capped by a kill from Stuart. Drew outscored the Bloodhounds, 9-5, in taking a 14-10, following an attack error by Reilly Catan. John Jay outscored Drew, 10-6, to tie the set at 20-20 after a kill from Madison Reyes. The Bloodhounds closed out the set on a 5-1 run. John Jay held Drew to just -.069 hitting percentage.

Second Set -
Drew raced out to a 4-1 lead following an attack error. John Jay rallied on the strength of a 9-3 run. The Bloodhounds used a 10-5 spurt to build a 20-12 lead following a kill by Stuart. The Rangers responded with a 9-4 run of their own, trimming the John Jay to three, 24-21. Stuart closed the set with another kill, giving John Jay a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bloodhounds had three blocks in the set while limiting Drew's attack to .000.

Third Set -  
Drew jumped out to a 4-1 in the third set. The deficit swelled to 10-4 following an attack error. The Bloodhounds staged a 13-6 run in retaking the lead, 17-16. Smith produced an ace that pushed the lead by two, 18-16. John Jay upped the lead to 23-20 on a kill from Stuart. Drew tied the match at 23-23 following an ace by Marissa Guajardo. Two bad hits by Drew sealed the victory for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay produced 33 kills while hitting .096 while limiting Drew to just -.010 hitting percentage.

The Bloodhounds return home to the Doghouse on Friday, September 13, as they will host their first tri-match of the season. John Jay will play Old Westbury at 3:00 p.m. Old Westbury will then take on Penn College at 5:00 p.m. before the Bloodhounds close out the day against Penn College at 7:00 p.m.
