Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Penn State Abington

New York, NY - After clearing the first week of the season without a loss, the John Jay women's soccer team kicked off the second week with the team's home opener on Randall's Island.

The host Bloodhounds welcomed Penn State Abington to New York for their first meeting on John Jay's home turf, after earning a 6-1 win in Pennsylvania in 2023.

This trip was a successful one for the visiting Nittany Lions, who defeated the Bloodhounds, 4-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

20' - Just as both sides settled into the match, the Nittany Lions had their first significant opportunity. PSU Abington's Nayeska Ravelo dribbled her way into a one-on-one opportunity against John Jay goalkeeper Gianna Duarte, with Duarte missing her attempt to grab the ball off of Ravelo's foot. Ravelo dribbled the ball over the line to give her side a 1-0 lead.

48' - Ravelo struck again to start the second period, taking advantage of a misplayed ball to earn another solo opportunity on net. This time, she slotted the ball away down the center to double the Nittany Lions lead.

57' - Abington struck again after John Jay's Ellarose Bianca was called for a foul at the top of the Bloodhound box. Madison McDowell stepped up for the direct kick and curled one into the top left corner, giving the Nittany Lions a 3-0 advantage.

59' - The Nittany Lions closed out the scoring just two minutes later. Sara Hogan earned the assist as a well-placed throw-in put Meghan McGinley in position to raise her team's lead to 4-0.

Lucia Giangaspero and Morgan Torres led the Bloodhounds with two shots on goal each.

Duarte finished the match with four saves.

NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds look to bounce back as the non-conference home schedule rolls on. John Jay welcomes Kean to Randall's Island on Saturday, Sept. 14, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
