Women's Volleyball Remains Undefeated In 2024; Defeats Wilkes In Home Opener On Thursday

New York, NY - The John Jay College women's volleyball team kicked off the first home event of the 2024-25 season, earning a 3-1 (25-14; 25-18, 22-25, 25-12). 

With the victory, the Bloodhounds moved to 3-0 on the season and secured their first-ever win against Wilkes (1-3 all-time). The Colonels fall to 0-2 on the season. Additionally, this marks just the third time in program history that John Jay has started the year 3-0 or better (2022 - 4-0 | 2017 - 4-0).

Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Julia Stuart paced the Bloodhounds with 12 kills while defending CUNYAC Player of the Year, Josanne Lewis, notched a double-double, finishing with 11 kills, 11 digs, and four aces. Meghan Smith served up 40 assists while adding 14 digs and two blocks. Kristin Gretener and Reilly Catan each finished with a team-high 15 digs while Gretener matched Lewis with four aces.

Sierra Hines led the way for Wilkes with 13 kills. Alexis Reedy totaled 15 digs. Kendra Kalp (12 digs), Alexa Cassel (11 digs), and Emma Sanford (10 digs) all finished with double-digit dig totals. Cassel had six blocks.

First Set:
The Bloodhounds rallied off five straight points in building a 7-2 advantage on a kill from Lewis. Wilkes got to within four, 10-6 before John Jay went ahead 15-9 on an attack error from Ava Wahlers. The visitors scored four of the next five points in trimming the lead down to three, 16-13, before the Bloodhounds regained their composure, staging a 9-1 run, capped by a Stuart kill that secured the first set for the home team. John Jay hit .333 in the opening set while limiting the visitors to just .115.

Second Set: A fast start to the second set favored the Bloodhounds, as John Jay led 4-1. Wilkes rallied as they found themselves down by one, 6-5, on a kill from Cassel. The Colonels kept pace with John Jay, tying the set at 13-13 following a mishit from Stuart. The Bloodhounds used a 12-5 run, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Lewis to secure the second-set triumph. Both teams struggled in the set, as Wilkes hit .125 and held the home team .100 but the Bloodhounds recorded five total aces, two from Lewis down the stretch to earn the point.

Third Set: The home team shifted their lineup for the third set, which paid dividends early, going up 4-2. The Colonels promptly responded, using a 10-3 spurt to take a 12-7 lead, thanks to a Jenna Baron ace. Smith and Hailey Waugaman combined on the block, which stopped the rally. The visitors held a six-point lead, 19-13, following a mishit from Nina Bongiovanni. Bongiovanni quickly rebounded, with an emphatic kill, that sparked a 7-2 run, tying the match at 21 on a block by Madison Reyes. Wilkes closed out the set on a 4-1 run, capped by a kill from Hines. The Bloodhounds.

Fourth Set: Following their first drop set of the season, John Jay raced to an 11-2 advantage, with Lewis spearheading the offensive attack. Ellmedia Hodzic recorded an ace, upping the Bloodhounds' lead to 15-4. John Jay proceeded to score 10 of the final 18 points, with Stuart killing the potential rally from Wilkes as John Jay remained undefeated.

The Bloodhounds hit .173 from the match while recording 17 aces. Wilkes, who hit .124, only recorded two aces.

John Jay will look to remain unbeaten this weekend when they trek to Patchogue, NY to compete in the St. Joseph's University - Long Island Tri-Match. The Bloodhounds will take on the host Golden Eagles at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7 before taking on Albertus Magnus at 1:00 p.m.
