Women's Basketball's Comeback Attempt Falls Short At Home Against Baruch On Wednesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team trimmed a 20-point deficit down to as little of nine, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Bloodhounds fell, 68-57, at The Doghouse on Wednesday evening. 

Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Michaela Lattimore, who led the way with 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting. The Morristown, NJ native grabbed eight rebounds in 31 minutes of action. 

Senior guard Ashley Zeolla tallied 13 points on 5 of 13 shooting from the field. The Yorktown Heights, NY native corralled five boards while swiping three steals in 38 minutes. Essence Richardson was the third Bloodhound in double-figures, finishing with 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting while helping on the boards, grabbing six in 24 minutes of work. 

Natalie Simonds and Briana Minick each finished with eight points, with Simonds matching Lattimore with a team-high eight boards, and dished out four team-leading helpers.  

Mia Castillo, who entered play tied for second in the nation in scoring (27.4 ppg), matched her average, finishing with a game-high 27 points on 12 of 31 shooting while hitting 3 of 10 from three-point range. She added a team-high eight assists and seven steals. Angela Bacarella netted 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting. D'Andre McRae grabbed a team-high ten rebounds while registering five steals and two blocks.

The Bearcats opened the contest with five straight points, a three-pointer from Lola Idir followed by a Castillo jumper. The Bloodhounds responded right back as Alexis Jones fired off a three-pointer off the feed from Bah before Zeolla netted a jumper from the corner to even the contest at 5-5. Bacarella drilled in a mid-range jumper to give the visitors an early lead before a hook shot from Lattimore again evened the score, 7-7, at the 6:10 mark of the first quarter. 

Zeolla converted from the line as John Jay regained the lead at 9-7. The Bearcats followed up with a 12-0 run, increasing their lead to 19-9, with Castillo netting eight of the 12 points. Lattimore hit the baseline jumper to halt the run as the Bloodhounds trialed 19-11 with just 23 seconds remaining in the stanza.

Baruch started to pull away, staging a 15-2 run, increasing their lead to 34-13 in the second quarter before Minick hit a floating jumper, stopping the Bearcats' run. 
The two teams traded the final 20 points of the quarter, as Richardson netted six of the Bloodhounds' 10 points, which included a coast-to-coast layup while drawing contact. 

Baruch entered the half with a 44-25 lead. The Bloodhounds held a 25-16 edge on the boards in 20 minutes of play.

When play resumed, the Bloodhounds started to chip into the Baruch lead, as Lattimore opened the third quarter with a layup while Minick hit one of two from the free-throw line.

Simonds hit on a left-win triple off the pass from Lattimore as John Jay continued to erase the deficit, trailing 44-31, at the 7:07 mark of the third. The Bloodhounds made a furious push, cutting the lead to 54-43 after outscoring Baruch 12-10 over the last 6:46 of the third quarter. Richardson and Minick were the catalysts, combining for eight of the 12 points, while the team hit on 4 of 9 during the run and forced six Bearcat turnovers.

The Bloodhounds opened the scoring in the fourth as Minick hit on one of two from the line, trimming the Baruch advantage to ten, 54-44. Both teams struggled to find their offensive range before Bacarella hit a jumper off the pass from Castillo. The Bloodhounds continued to mount a comeback, using a 7-4 burst to get to within nine, 60-51, as Simonds swished home a corner triple from Minick. 

Lillianna Morales converted on a layup that pushed the lead back to double-digits, as Lattimore hit one of two from the line. Baruch used a 6-0 run with Bacarella hitting a deep two-pointer from the wing that sealed the victory for the visitors as John Jay went 2 for 7 over the final four minutes. 

For the game, the Bloodhounds were held to 35.2 percent shooting from the field while Baruch hit on 41.3 percent. John Jay three-point defense was on display, as the Bearcats only converted 5 of 23 from deep while the Bloodhounds hit on 3 of 8.

John Jay held Baruch to just one free throw attempt in the contest while converting on 16 of 24 (66.7 percent). The Bloodhounds held a 48-36 edge on the boards, highlighted by a 33-25 mark on the defensive glass. Baruch capitalized on 34 John Jay turnovers, scoring 31 points. 

John Jay will be back on the court, Saturday, January 18, as they will travel to the Bronx, NY to square off with Lehman. Tipoff is set for noon.
