Men's Basketball Shines Against CCNY in CUNYAC Play

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team returned to action on Wednesday night, fresh off a crucial win on the CUNY Athletic Conference  (CUNYAC) calendar.

The Bloodhounds were dominant in The Bronx on Jan. 18, handing the Lehman College Lightning their first loss on the conference slate, 82-69. The team returned to The Doghouse for its first meeting of the season with the City College of New York (CCNY) Beavers.

After taking a late lead in the first half, the Bloodhounds outscored the visitors, 54-36, in the final 20 minutes to post an 86-61 win. The Wednesday night victory earned a season-high margin of victory of 25 points.

The Bloodhounds move to 12-5 on the season and climb to second in the CUNYAC rankings with a 5-1 conference record.

John Jay came out in the first 20 minutes with one of their most efficient first-half shooting performances of the season, hitting 52% of their shots from the field and 50% from three-point range.

The conference foes were level through the first nine minutes, trading seven lead changes. TJ Chisolm gave the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the game at that point, hitting his first three-pointer with 8:18 to play and giving his side a 19-15.

Keyshawn Miller extended the run with five straight points of his own, capping a 10-3 Bloodhound run that gave them a 24-18 lead in the final six minutes of the half.

Despite the Beavers pulling within one point down the stretch, John Jay secured a 32-25 halftime lead by scoring the final five points of the half.

Miller nearly headed to the locker room with a double-double, finishing the first 20 minutes with 12 points and 8 rebounds.He continued his run in the opening minutes of the second half, contributing to a 13-3 run in the first six minutes that pushed the John Jay lead to nearly 20 points.

Jamir Stewart led the charge in the final frame, scoring five consecutive points to give the Bloodhounds a 52-34 lead with under 12 minutes to play. Stewart finished the second half with all 16 of his  points.

Syl Granda's lone three of the second half pushed the hosts' advantage over 20 points, leading 57-35, with 10:54 remaining. Isaac Holmes made it seven straight points with another three on the next possession.

Holmes was perfect behind the three-point line, hitting three triples and finished with 12 points in the game.

The Bloodhounds held CCNY to just 21 made field goals for the game, the third-lowest mark for a Bloodhound opponent this season.

After back-to-back three-pointers by Isaac, Elijah Holmes hit his first jumper of the game to give the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the game, 84-56.

John Jay closed out with a 86-61 victory. The home side finished the win shooting 52.5% from the field, their second-highest mark this season and highest in conference play.

Keyshawn Miller concluded with 20 points; his fifth time hitting that mark this season.

Stewart finished with 16 points and Syl Granda and Isaac Holmes joined him in double-digit scoring with 12 points each.

TJ Chisolm hit a season-high six assists, adding five points off the bench.

NEXT UP: The Bloodhound homestand continues, as John Jay hosts Medgar Evers for a men's and women's doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 24. Tip-off for the men's game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
