Women's Hoops Earns Third Straight Win After Defeating Medgar Evers On Friday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team earned their third straight victory and back-to-back home triumphs on Friday, defeating the visiting Medgar Evers College Cougars, 73-51.

Senior Ashley Zeolla and sophomore Michaela Lattimore each had 16 points, with Lattimore grabbing seven rebounds and a block. Zeolla, fresh of recording her 1,000th career point against CCNY, connected on 7 of 8 from the line while grabbing five rebounds, dishing out two assists, recording a steal, and swatting two shots in 28 minutes.

Briana Minick added nine points on 4 of 9 shooting while matching Lattimore with seven caroms. She added four helpers and had a steal in 19 minutes. Ayanna Edwards finished with eight points while grabbing six boards, distributing a team-high six assists, and adding four steals to her ledger. 

Natalie Simonds, Alexis Jones, and Morgan Kimmi each had seven points, with Jones and Kimmi combining for 11 rebounds. Essence Richardson pulled down a team-best eight caroms.

The visitors were paced by Alexis Davis, who led all scorers with 29 points on 11 of 29 shooting. She registered a double-double, tallying 12 rebounds. She swatted three shots, dished out two assists, and had a steal in the 40 minutes.

Jennifer Metra tallied eight points while reaching double-figures on the boards, finishing with ten. 

The Bloodhounds were held to a 1 of 4 start early on as the Cougars hit 4 of 8 in the first three minutes of the contest. The Bloodhounds mounted their comeback, utilizing a 10-4 run to tie the game at 12-12 following a Zeolla layup at the 3:21 mark. 

John Jay took their first lead of the contest when Lattimore hit one of two from the line, going ahead 13-12, and closed out the frame with five points, capped by a Minick wing three-pointer as the Bloodhounds led 18-12.

The Bloodhounds opened the second quarter scoring six of the first eight points, going ahead 24-14, as Lattimore muscled in two in the paint. The Cougars responded, cutting the deficit to five, 24-19, as Lyons converted on the pull-up jumper. John Jay staged a 7-0 run over the next two minutes, increasing their lead to 31-19, as Edwards converted on a floating jumper off the pass from Bah.

The Bloodhounds entered the break with a 35-23 advantage, with Zeolla netting 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting. Minick added seven points and four boards in her 12 minutes.

John Jay held Medgar Evers to just 25.7 percent shooting in the opening quarter while converting 35.3 percent from the field. Both teams pulled down 28 rebounds.

The Bloodhound offense continued to fire on all cylinders, as John Jay built a 20-point lead (47-27), and they outscored the Cougars 12-4 over the first half of the third quarter, with Lattimore pacing the offense with nine points.

Davis continued her scoring prowess for the Cougars, ending the Bloodhounds' run with a jumper, before Alexis Jones hit a top-of-the-key three-pointer, giving John Jay a 50-29 advantage. John Jay finished the third quarter on an 8-0 run, holding the visitors without a field goal over the final 2:33 as they took a 55-29 lead. 

The visitors scored two straight buckets before Morgan Kimmi converted on a layup chance for her fifth point of the contest, extending the lead to 57-33.

Following two free throws made by Metra, Simonds drilled two three-pointers on consecutive possessions as the Bloodhounds' bench erupted, with John Jay moving ahead, 63-37. Medgar scored 14 of the game's final 24 points, with Davis netting 13 in the final 5:43.

For the game, the Bloodhounds hit 34.2 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range. They also held a 58-46 margin on the boards, including a 25-15 advantage on the offensive glass.

John Jay will go for their fourth straight win on Tuesday, January 28, as they welcome York College. 

Tuesday is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night and National Girls Women In Sports Day.
