Men's Basketball Continues Winning Ways At Hunter With Fifth Straight Triumph

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team remained atop the CUNYAC standings on Friday evening, earning a 103-66 road triumph over the Hunter College Hawks. 

The Bloodhounds improved to a league-best 15-5 overall and 8-1 in conference matches, which is tied with Lehman and Baruch. Hunter falls to 4-16 and 2-7 in league games.

The 103 points against Hunter tonight marks the third time the Bloodhounds have topped the century mark against the Hawks. They scored 111 points against Hunter on January 13, 2022 and 118 back on January 11, 2023. 

Five Bloodhounds reached double-digits, led by Jamir Stewart, who netted 20 points in 22 minutes. Isaac Holmes chipped in 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field while hitting 5 of 11 from the outside. He and Stewart combined to go 9 of 21 from the outside. Holmes finished with a team-high four steals in 18 minutes of work. 

Syl Granda and TJ Chisolm netted 12 points each. Granda grabbed eight boards and dished out five helpers. Jeremiah Cardi was the fifth Bloodhound in double-digits, chipping ten points on a 4 of 8 shooting display. He added six rebounds in his 18 minutes of play. 

Keyshawn Miller filled up the stat sheet, scoring eight points, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds, dishing out seven assists, and recording three steals and a block.

Enzo Caceres-Roussel and Felipe Carter each scored ten points on a combined 5 of 13 shooting display from the field for the Hawks.

The Hawks opened the game with a jumper from Casey Meyers before Jordan Evelyn hit a three-pointer to begin the scoring for the Bloodhounds. Jack Meyers connected on a three-pointer to give the Hawks the lead back, 5-3 before Granda dialed up a shot from three. 

The Hawks took their last contest lead, 8-6, on a three-pointer from Caceres-Roussel at the 17:28 mark of the first half.

John Jay found their range over the next 4:45 of the contest, hitting on 6 of 10 from the field and 4 of 6 from three-point range, dialing up an 18-2 run that ballooned their lead to 24-10 after Holmes converted his third triple during the burst.

Donovon Cola rattled in a triple of his own, briefly stopping the run before Holmes hit on another three-pointer, increasing the John Jay lead to 27-13.

Over the final nine minutes of the frame, the Bloodhounds outscored Hunter 29-19, with Stewart serving as the catalyst, netting 12 of the 29 points as John Jay converted 10 of 16 from the field and 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.

John Jay hit 54.3 percent in the opening 20 minutes while going 12 of 21 from deep (57.1 percent). The Bloodhounds defense was on full display, forcing 13 turnovers in the half.

The Bloodhounds started the second half on a 14-8 run, capped by a Stewart three-pointer that pushed the John Jay lead up to 70-40.

John Jay finished the contest outscoring Hunter, 33-26, capped by an alley-oop by Alsseny Diallo from Elijah Holmes with 53 seconds closing the game.

The Bloodhounds finished the contest, shooting 51.4 percent from the field (37 of 72) while holding Hunter to just 31.0 percent (18 of 58).

John Jay outmuscled Hunter 52-31 on the glass, including a 36-21 edge on the defensive glass.

The Bloodhounds will look for their sixth straight win on February 4 when they finish their season series with Baruch in a battle of the league's top teams.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
