Men's Basketball Falls To Baruch On Tuesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team fell to the Baruch College Bearcats, 84-62, in a battle for first place in the CUNYAC standings.
John Jay falls to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in the league, while Baruch remains in a tie with Lehman at 9-1 in the circuit and 12-9 overall.

Keyshawn Miller was the lone Bloodhound to reach double-figures, as the Yonkers, NY native finished with 24 points. He filled up the stat sheet, tallying seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and an assist. For Miller, tonight's 24-point outing marked his seventh of the season. Additionally, this marks the 17th time this season that he has pulled down at least five rebounds and 12th game with at least three steals. 

Baruch's Gerard Nicholson concluded the contest with a game-high 28 points on 9 of 18 shooting while converting 5 of 11 from three-point range and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. Brandon Goldberg also topped 20 points, netting 23 points on 7 of 11 shooting while hitting 9 of 13 from the line. He registered a double-double, finishing with 15 rebounds, 11 of which came on the defensive end. 

Dylan Minnick started the scoring off for the Bearcats before Nicholson hit a pull-up jumper. Miller converted on a layup on the following John Jay possession before Syl Granda banked in one off the widow from Emmanuel Adenekan, tying the game at 4-4. Miller continued his scoring prowess, netting the next six points for the visitors, as John Jay held a 10-7 lead.

Baruch responded with a 7-1 run to take a 14-11 lead, as Nicholson's layup attempt was good at the 7:36 mark. Jordan Evelyn ended the run with a layup and completed the three-point play, tying the game at 14.

The two teams split the last 16 points as Adrian Kopec hit one of two from the line, tying the game at 22 with 3:31 left to play before halftime. 

The Bearcats finished the half outscoring the Bloodhounds, 13-6, to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

Minnick commenced the second half, similar to how he started the game with a layup. Jamir Stewart answered with a three of his own, shrinking the lead to six, 37-31.

Baruch sparked an 11-1 run over the next 4:32, increasing their lead to 48-32. During the run, Goldberg had six of the 11 points while holding the visitors without a made field goal (0 of 7; 0 of 5 3PT).

The Bloodhounds responded with a run of their own, an 11-4 outburst, with Omar Calderon hitting a three-pointer that closed the gap to 52-43. Baruch reeled off 17 of the next 19 points over a 3:38 span, elevating their lead to 69-45 as Goldberg capped the run with a layup. 

The Bloodhounds scored 17 of the final 32 points.

For the game, John Jay shot 30.1 percent from the field (22 of 73). Baruch converted close to 40.0 percent (25 of 64). The Bearcats hit 40.0 percent from the outside (8 of 20) while limiting the Bloodhounds, who ranked 70th in the nation in three-point shooting (35.9), to just 16.7 percent (5 of 30). John Jay was outmuscled on the glass, 59-41.

The Bloodhounds return to the court on Saturday, February 8, welcoming Brooklyn College to The Doghouse. 

Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. (or 25 minutes following the conclusion of the women's contest).
