Women's Volleyball Earns Eighth Consecutive Win After Outlasting FDU Florham In Five Sets

Madison, NJ - The John Jay women's volleyball team held off the FDU Florham Devils in a back-and-forth battle non-conference tilt at the Ferguson Recreation Center as the Bloodhounds earned a 3-2 victory (25-12; 21-25; 25-21; 18-25; 15-13).

The win for John Jay extended its win streak to eight straight. The eight straight wins are tied with Hope, Bethany Lutheran, and Marywood for 11th longest in NCAA Division III. 

CUNYAC Player of the Week Jadyn Orava finished with her seventh double-double of the season, posting a career high 24 kills to go along with 16 digs.


Lizbeth Martinez led the way with a team and career-high 22 digs. Hailey Waugaman also finished with a career-best 14 digs and three aces. Adrienne Xiao had 36 assists while Theresa Schmitt served up five aces.


FDU Florham was paced by Mackenzie Crandall, who finished with 12 kills. Genevieve Fitch added 11 kills. Amaya Ocasio notched 29 assists while Arianna Wood finished with 17 digs.


The Bloodhounds trailed 6-4 early on in the first set before rallying back, using a 12-3 run to lead 16-9 following a kill from Waugaman. John Jay closed out the first set on a 9-2 run, capped by an ace.


John Jay held a 12-10 lead in the second set before the Devils rallied back, taking a 16-13 lead following a kill from Crandall. Waugaman recorded another kill to even the set at 19-19, but FDU closed the set on a 6-2 burst with Fitch posting a kill for the set clincher.


Both teams traded points early before the Devils created some separation, as Wood served up an ace to make it 10-6. John Jay responded with an 8-3 burst to take a slim 14-13 lead. Tayla O'Connor posted a kill to make it 15-15. John Jay sealed the set thanks to a 10-6 run, capped by a kill from Madison Mullan.


In the fourth set, FDU used a 5-0 run to take a 9-6 lead before the Bloodhounds posted three straight points to even the set. The home team started to pull away on the heels of a 12-3 run, as they led 21-12. The Devils forced a fifth set as Hannah Weinman recorded the kill.


John Jay opened the deciding set on a 6-1 run as Schmitt set the tone with an ace to start the scoring. The Bloodhounds' lead swelled to 11-4 before the Devils came back on a 6-0 run, as O'Connor's ace brought FDU to within one, 11-10. The fifth set was tied at 13-13 after a kill from Fitch before Mullan responded with a big kill, and an attack error from Crandall sealed the match for the Bloodhounds.


John Jay returns to the Doghouse on Saturday, October 4, as they will host both Rutgers-Newark and Regis.
