Women's Volleyball Posts Split Of Tri-Match On Saturday; Extended Win Streak Against Rutgers-Newark Before Falling To Regis In Five Sets

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team played a pair of back-and-forth home matches in Saturday's tri-match, as the Bloodhounds defeated Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Regis.

With Saturday's results, the Bloodhounds move to 12-3 overall. Rutgers-Newark dropped both contests, falling to 7-10 while Regis moves to 11-7.

John Jay 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (27-27; 25-21; 25-27; 25-14)

The Bloodhounds were pitted in a back-and-forth tilt with the Scarlet Raiders, with the Bloodhounds picking up a 3-1 victory. Three Bloodhounds produced career-highs in the match, as the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, Jadyn Orava, finished with a career-high 28 kills en route to another double-double, adding ten digs in the win. The Gilbert, AZ native hit .387 while posting 31.5 points in the victory.

Madison Mullan registered a career-high 11 kills while hitting .333 and serving up three aces and finishing with 15.0 points. Emilia Cascapera notched 13 kills. Lizbeth Martinez added a team-high 19 digs while Adrienne Xiao recorded a personal-best 52 assists and 14 digs, which was one shy of her career-best. 

Tracey Ilderis paced the visitors with ten kills while Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte (12 digs), Cyan Long (11 digs), and Nicole Sullivan (12 digs) all had double-digit digs.

The Scarlet Raiders raced out to a 9-6 lead before the Bloodhounds rallied back to within one, 11-10, as Alex Overkamp recorded the kill. The visitors staged a 7-2 burst to build an 18-12 lead. John Jay continued to climb back in the contest. An 11-3 run gave the Bloodhounds a lead before Nina Bongiovanni closed the set with an ace. 

The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into the second set, producing 21 kills as a team to win the set by four, 25-21. Trailing 17-14, the Bloodhounds registered five straight kills to take a 19-17 lead. Orava sealed the set with a kill.

The Bloodhounds continued to rally in the third set after facing an early deficit. John Jay was ahead 21-18 before the visitors used a 9-4 run, capped by an ace from Shayla Moody-Santos to get on the board. 

John Jay produced its most efficient hitting performance in the fourth set, as the team hit at a .417 clip. Mullan commenced the set with back-to-back aces before a kill from Orava. John Jay closed the match with a kill from Cascapera.

As a team, the Bloodhounds hit .260 with 62 kills on 154 total attacks. John Jay produced 13 aces and had 60 assists in the opening match.  

John Jay 2, Regis (21-25; 18-25; 25-21; 25-23; 7-15)

In the evening match, John Jay nearly pulled off a stunning comeback before falling in five sets to Regis.Orava paced the Bloodhounds with 19 kills while Cascapera chipped in 11 kills. Martinez anchored the defense with a match-high 20 digs.

Avery Mola led the way with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Eva Catalanotto had 12, and Grace Fabiano added ten. Alexandra Rivera posted 43 assists.

The Pride responded after being down 10-7 with an 8-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Bloodhounds fought back with a 6-0 burst of their own, cutting the deficit to just 20-19, but Regis put the set away with an ace from Catalanotto. 

Regis opened the second set on a 9-3 run following a kill from Ayla Albers. Orava posted two straight kills to get John Jay to within two, 17-15. The Pride finished the set on a 7-2 run to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Bloodhounds trailed 6-1 in the third set before storming back to take an 11-10 lead following an ace from Xiao. The two teams traded points until the latter part of the set when Cascapera produced two emphatic kills to increase John Jay's lead to 24-20 and ended the set with another kill.

Momentum was on the Bloodhounds' side, leading 14-11 in the fourth set, but Regis climbed back in the contest, trailing 22-20 after a kill from Albers. Cascapera once again was at the forefront for the Bloodhounds and recorded a kill, forcing a deciding fifth set.

In the deciding set, Regis stormed out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring the final six points to halt John Jay's nine-match win streak.

The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Tuesday, October 7, as they travel to Hunter in a rematch of the last two CUNYAC championships, including last year's first-ever title for John Jay.
