New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team extended its win streak to five straight after picking up victories against Alvernia and St. Joseph's University - Long Island, 3-0, at The Doghouse on Saturday.
The Bloodhounds improve to 17-3 on the season while Alvernia falls to 7-14 after dropping the opener to John Jay and falling to the Golden Eagles. St. Joseph's University moves to 12-6 overall.
The 17-3 mark is the program's best 20-match start in program history, surpassing their previous best of 16-4 set in 2023.
John Jay 3, Alvernia 0
The Bloodhounds tallied 41 kills on .210 hitting, compared to the Golden Wolves' 24 kills on .67. John Jay dished 38 assists, 37 of those coming from Adrienne Xiao, and posted 15 aces, with Hailey Waugaman producing nearly half of those with seven.
Jadyn Orava led the way with 20 kills and seven digs while hitting .310. Xiao and Lizbeth Martinez each finished with six digs, while Madison Mullan added nine kills.
Alvernia was paced by Hailey McDevitt, who had nine kills. Melina Stinsky had a team-high eight digs while Allison Wolf finished with six.
Both teams exchanged points early on before the Bloodhounds went ahead 10-6 following an attack error. Alvernia rallied to cut the deficit to one, 10-9. John Jay went ahead by four, 16-12, following a kill from Orava before the Golden Wolves made their comeback, capped by an ace from McDevitt to make it 17-16. Both teams challenged one another for leverage on the scoreboard, but it was the Bloodhound who came up with the 29-27 first set win off an Orava kill.
John Jay cruised to a 10-3 advantage in the second set after a kill from Mullan. Nina Bongiovanni served up an ace that made it 13-5. The lead swelled to 17-7 on an Orava kill from Xiao. Alvernia used an 11-2 run of their own in closing the gap to one, 19-18, on Stinsky's kill from Presley Carnes. The visitors continued to fight back, trimming the lead down to 24-22, but an attack error sealed the second set for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the third set, holding a 7-0 lead as Waugaman produced four straight aces during the run. John Jay increased its lead to 14-3, thanks to a kill from Orava. The Bloodhounds picked up the winning, closing a 10-4, in which Orava produced the final kill of the match.
John Jay 3, St. Joseph's University - Long Island 0
In a closely contested match, the Bloodhounds were able to outlast the visiting St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles, 3-0 (25-21; 25-22; 25-23) in the final match of the tri-match.
Cascapera led the way with 12 kills. Orava had 11 kills and eight digs. Martinez paced the Bloodhounds with 13 digs while Xiao notched 32 assists in the victory.
Nina Vanderhoof led the way for the visitors with 13 kills and added five digs. Lucia D'Ambrosio and Sarah Montefusco each had nine digs, and Lauren Goss had 28 assists.
John Jay raced out to a 6-3 lead before the Golden Eagles answered back to even the set. SJLI went ahead 11-9 on a kill from Vanderhoof before the Bloodhounds rallied back with four straight points as Bongiovanni served up two pivotal aces during this span. The Golden Eagles, following a kill from Cascapera, trimmed the deficit to one, 21-20, but the Bloodhounds scored four of the final five points, with Martinez serving up an ace that got it to set point before Mullan sealed the win.
John Jay had its most efficient hitting of the contest in the second set, converting at .314 with 14 kills, three errors in 35 total attacks. The two teams traded points before the Bloodhounds struck a 5-0 run late, as Theresa Schmitt recorded the ace on Olivia Baumann that made it 21-18. Orava closed the set with another kill.
St. Joseph's - Long Island claimed a 3-1 lead on an ace from Alison Tsororos. Juilano added an ace that made it 7-3 before Bongiovanni recorded the kill. The Bloodhounds rallied back with five straight points to take a 20-18 lead as Schmitt recorded another ace. Juliano killed a rally that gave possession back to the visitors, but a service error returned possession to John Jay. Xiao stepped up to the service line and recorded the ace, and Orava concluded the match with a dominant kill.
The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Tuesday, October 28, as they will head to Jamaica, NY, to tangle with the York College Cardinals in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
