Women's Volleyball Remains Unbeaten In CUNYAC Play, Extends Win Streak To Six Straight With Road Victory At York

Jamaica, NY - The defending CUNYAC women's volleyball champions continued their perfect CUNYAC run, sweeping the York College Cardinals, 3-0 (25-8; 25-10; 25-12) at the York College Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 18-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in league play, while the Cardinals stand at 3-13; 1-4 in the conference.

Madison Mullan led the way for the Bloodhounds with six kills while adding two digs, three assists, and two aces. Nina Bongiovanni had five kills and two digs.  

Theresa Schmitt and Lizbeth Martinez had four kills each, while Schmitt led the team with four digs. Caroline Guerney had a team-leading 15 assists and two aces. Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Adrienne Xiao produced a team-high seven aces.

Zia Lefebvre paced York with five kills and seven digs. Samantha Panameno had six assists. Jayme Mateo registered five digs for the Cardinals.

The Bloodhounds got on the board first before the Cardinals staged a 5-0 run in taking a 5-2 lead. John Jay orchestrated a 16-1 run, as Xiao recorded all seven of her assists during the run, while Orava and Alex Overkamp produced two kills apiece. The visitors closed out the set on a 7-0 run, capped by three straight aces from Overkamp.

John Jay jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set before Simranjit Kaur ended the rally with a kill. A 10-2 burst propelled the Bloodhounds ahead 17-5 following a kill from Mullan. The Bloodhounds clinched the second set on an attack error.

The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the third set, cruising to a 10-1 lead. With the score in favor of John Jay at 16-4, York made a run of its own, a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 16-9 following an ace from Lefebvre. John Jay got three straight kills from Guerney, Bongiovanni, and Schmitt before setting up match point on an ace from Guerney. Panameno recorded an ace for the Cardinals to keep the set going, but John Jay clinched the match on a service error.

The Bloodhounds hit .344 as a team, hitting .500 in the second set, recording 14 kills with three errors in 22 total attempts. John Jay served up 23 aces, their second-highest total to date (28 at Medgar Evers - 9/15).

John Jay continues its road trip on Thursday, October 30, as they travel to Montclair, NJ, to tangle with Montclair State for a 6:00 p.m. first serve.
