Women's Volleyball Puts Forth Valiant Effort At NYU Tri-Match Against Host Violets And Randolph-Macon

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team concluded the week at the NYU Tri-Match, where they were pitted against the host Violets and Randolph Macon at the John A. Paulson Center on the campus of NYU.

The Bloodhounds took the first set against Randolph-Macon, 31-29, but dropped the next three, 22-25; 21-25; 21-25. Against NYU, John Jay fell in three sets, 17-25; 20-25; 11-25.

With today's results, the Bloodhounds fall to 18-6 overall while Randolph-Macon moves to 12-10 and NYU improves to 16-10.


John Jay 1 vs. Randolph-Macon 3

Sophomore Jadyn Orava led the way for the Bloodhounds with 25 kills and added six digs and three aces for 28 points. Madison Mullan added 12 kills for 15.5 points. Adrienne Xiao recorded 48 assists, two kills, five digs, and one ace.

Randolph-Macon's Mia Goode registered a double-double, finishing with 21 kills and 11 digs. Grace Ostvig added 14 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Caitlin Smith served up four aces and had 51 assists.
The Bloodhounds opened the set on a 7-2 run before the Yellow Jackets evened the set at 9-9 following a 7-2 of their own, capped by an Ostvig kill. The two teams traded points for the majority of the set before Emilia Cascapera killed the rally, setting up set point 30-29. A bad set gave the Bloodhounds the first set win.

The second set was more even-paced than the first set. Nina Bongiovanni recorded back-to-back kills, as the Bloodhounds took a 13-12 lead. John Jay evened at 20-20 following a kill from Orava, but RMC closed the set on a 5-2 burst capped by Goode's kill.


The Yellow Jackets held an 11-7 lead early in the set before the Bloodhounds rattled off four straight points to get to within one, 12-11. Randolph Macon went ahead by four, 19-15, on an Ella Courtney kill, but the Bloodhounds continued to rally, getting to within two, 22-20, thanks to a combined block from Mullan and Xiao. RMC closed out the set with a kill from Marie Hall and went ahead 2-1 in the match.


In the fourth set, the Bloodhounds kept pace, but an 8-1 run, capped by a Goode ace, increased the Yellow Jackets' lead to 18-9. Orava served up two aces to trim the deficit down to 19-15. John Jay continued to battle, as Cascapera and Hailey Waugaman recorded back-to-back kills, but a service error clinched the match for RMC.


John Jay 0 vs. NYU 3

In their first match since the 1996 season, the Bloodhounds kept pace in the first two sets before NYU completed the shutout with a dominant third set.

Orava led the way with 14 kills and five digs while Waugaman and Lizbeth Martinez each had seven digs to pace John Jay. Xiao had 23 assists and four digs with two aces.


Three Violets finished with double-digit kills, led by Chloe Lemons, who finished with 11 kills. Sarah Lattan and Grace Nelson each finished with ten kills. Kaitlyn Sato and Ava Launsbach had nine digs. Jessica Spierenburg had four aces while Launsbach had 22 assists. Aiden Roberts notched 15 assists.


A service ace from Xiao knotted the first set at five. NYU staged an 11-4 run, capped by a Lattan kill that increased the Violets' lead to 16-9. NYU added to its lead with a kill from Nelson, making it 19-12 before the Bloodhounds rallied with three straight points, capped by a kill from Bongiovanni. NYU closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the first set.


The Violets opened the second on a 9-3 run following a kill from Lemons that pushed NYU ahead, 11-7. John Jay continued to fight back in the set, closing the deficit to three, 22-19, after a kill from Orava that highlighted four-straight points. Nelson recorded a kill to set up a
set point for NYU and closed the set with an ace.

The Bloodhounds traded opening points in the third set with a kill from Mullan before the Violets staged a 12-3 run to go ahead 13-4 in the set. NYU clinched the match on the heels of a 10-2 run, as Nelson notched the match-clinching kill.


The Bloodhounds will look to clinch the program's first-ever regular season title on Tuesday, November 4, as they will take on Lehman at 6:00 p.m. from The Doghouse.


Tuesday is Senior Night as they will recognize the Senior Class prior to the match.
