Women's Basketball Falls At WestConn, 62-52, On Monday Evening

Danbury, CT - The John Jay women's basketball team kept pace with the WestConn Wolves on Monday evening from the Stephen Feldman Arena, trailing by one after the first quarter and six at halftime and again in the third quarter, but WestConn took their largest lead of the game with 5:13 to play as the Bloodhounds dropped a 62-52 decision.

John Jay (0-2) had three players score in double-figures, led by Essence Richardson and newcomer Bryan Bascones, who each netted 12 points apiece on a combined 10 of 20 from the field, with Bascones pulling down six rebounds. Both players logged 27 minutes of action. 

Briana Minick was the third Bloodhound to net double-digits, finishing with ten points on 4 of 9 shooting. Alexis Jones chipped in seven points while Michaela Lattimore pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, 11 coming on the defensive glass. Miah Crockett had four points and a team-high three steals.

The Wolves (1-0) were paced by Sara Macary, who registered a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds, six coming on the offensive glass. Cameron Froehlich added 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting from three-point range. Leana Heitmann concluded the game with nine points and eight rebounds. Malaysia Dingle distributed a team-high five helpers.

Dingle got the scoring going for the Wolves with a three-pointer, but John Jay answered with five quick points, as Jones delivered a triple off the feed from Lattimore. The two teams continued to trade points with Macary hitting a jumper that gave WestConn a slim 11-8 lead with two minutes left in the first before Bascones made her way into the paint for two, trimming the deficit to 11-10.

Richardson tied the game at 12 in the early part of the second quarter before Heitmann converted on a three-pointer that pushed the Wolves' lead ahead, 15-12. The Bloodhounds continued to battle back, as Minick hit the following four points for the visitors, as John Jay trailed, 17-16.

WestConn used a 12-1 run to take a 29-17 lead after a jumper from Macary as Bascones ended the run with a jumper of her own. WestConn took a 12-point lead on a Froehlich three-pointer. Bascones kicked off an 8-0 run as Lattimore ended the quarter with a layup from Minick as John Jay trailed 36-30 at the break.


Minick scored John Jay's first six points of the third quarter, as the Bloodhounds got to within three, 39-36, over the first 3:30 of the frame. The Bloodhounds continued to battle as they reduced WestConn's lead down to three on two occasions, the last coming at the 1:15 mark when Bascones hit on the fastbreak layup after getting the pass from Kailani Galan.Heitmann made one of two from the line before Julyssa Patterson connected on a layup as WestConn went back up by six, 50-46.

The Wolves opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, capped by another layup from Patterson as WestConn went ahead 60-44. John Jay went 6 of 9 from the free-throw line down the stretch but couldn't overcome the double-digit lead the Wolves posted as WestConn secured the 62-52 win.


The Bloodhounds were held to just 29.5 percent from the field while hitting on 1 of 10 from the outside and converting 15 of 32 from the free-throw line. The Wolves hit on 33.3 percent of their field goals (21 of 63) while going 8 of 25 from three-point range (32.0 percent).

John Jay will close out their three-game road trip to start the season on Saturday, November 15, as they travel to Mahwah, NJ, to take on Ramapo. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
