Coast Guard Uses Fourth Quarter Surge To Defeat Bloodhounds In Women's Basketball Home Opener On Tuesday

New York, NY - Playing in front of the home faithful for the first time this season, the John Jay women's basketball team kept things close against the United States Coast Guard Academy after the first quarter and trailed by just five after three before a fourth quarter surge by the visiting the Bears was enough to get past John Jay, 78-62, on Tuesday evening from the The Doghouse.

John Jay falls to 0-4 on the young season while the Bears improve to 3-1.

Junior forward Michaela Lattimore led the way with a double-double, finishing with 22 points on 10 of 20 shooting from the field and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Senior guard Natalie Simonds added a season-best 13 points in 26 minutes of play.

Newcomer Bryan Bascones added seven points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Simonds, Miah Crockett, and Kailani Galan each had four assists.

Coast Guard's Dorothy Stotts led all scorers with 30 points on 11 of 21 shooting, which included a 5 of 11 marksmanship from three-point range. Olivia Wright was the only other player for the visitors in double-figures, hitting for 13 points while going 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Simonds scored four of the first six points by John Jay, who held a slim 6-4 advantage. The visitors staged an 8-2 burst to get the lead to 12-8 as Taylor Lynch hit from the outside off the feed from Stotts with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter.

The two teams split the final 24 points of the frame evenly as Morgan Kimmi's driving layup pulled John Jay to within five, 24-19, before Jones hit one of two from the line to end the frame. The two teams shot effectively well from the field, with John Jay hitting on 50.0 percent from the field early on (8 of 16) to Coast Guard's 45.0 percent (9 of 20).

Both teams struggled to find their range in the second, but John Jay was able to cut into the lead, trailing by three, 32-29, following a pair of makes from the free-throw line from Bascones. Coast Guard utilized an 11-3 run to close out the first half, holding the Bloodhounds to just a made basket in four chances, an Essence Richardson three-pointer, as the Bears took a 43-32 halftime lead.

John Jay commenced the second half with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to three, 43-40, after Lattimore completed the three-point play from the line.

The Bears outscored the Bloodhounds, 14-12 over the final 6:30 to take a 57-52 following a Crockett layup.

Coast Guard opened the fourth with a 17-4 run to build a 74-56 lead despite the Bears converting 4 of 11 from the field as they hit 8 of 10 free throws.

The Bloodhounds scored six of the final 10 points, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Bears.

For the game, John Jay shot 35.9 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bears, 49-41.
