Men's Basketball Defeats Old Westbury, 74-57, As Coach Holmes Earns First Career Win

Old Westbury, NY - Behind a pair of 20-point performances from Keyshawn Miller and Ronnie McIntyre, the defending CUNYAC men's basketball champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, earned their first win of the season, defeating Old Westbury, 74-57, giving head coach James Holmes the first win of his head coaching career.
 



Miller shot 9 of 18 from the field while dishing out seven assists and recording three steals in 37 minutes of work while scoring 21 points. McIntyre converted on 8 of 13 from the floor while hitting on 5 of 7 from the outside in his 33 minutes of play to match Miller. He also added a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks. Jamir Stewart chipped in 15 points while distributing six assists in the victory.





Old Westbury was led by Joel Ofori, who finished with a double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds on 7 of 14 shooting. Imole Akinwale was the second Panther in double-figures, scoring 15 points and recording six steals.


John Jay opened the game on a 9-2 run, capped by a Stewart three-pointer off the James Bradberry feed. The lead swelled to 15-5 following a pair of trifectas from Adrian Kopec and McIntyre. Old Westbury found their shooter's touch, hitting on 7 of 15 from the field over the next nine minutes in trimming the deficit down to five, 27-22, with 4:12 remaining before halftime. The Bloodhounds closed out the stanza on a 10-2 burst, taking a 37-24 advantage to the locker rooms.

The Bloodhounds held the Panthers to just 29.0 shooting in the opening frame and 1 of 7 from the outside. John Jay hit on 42.4 percent from the field and close to 40.0 percent from the outside.

When play resumed for the second half, it was John Jay that controlled the tempo, outscoring Old Westbury, 18-11, over the first 5:30 of the half in building a 55-35 lead as Stewart and Amare Jordan combined for 11 of the 18 points during this span. John Jay shot 8 of 9 from the field during the run.


Over a six-minute mark, Old Westbury tried to chip away at the deficit, trailing 61-47, following a 12-6 run with Ofori scoring four of the 12 points.

The Bloodhounds established a 13-2 run over the next four minutes in taking a 74-49 lead as McIntyre hit again from the outside with just 3:09 left to play. Old Westbury scored eight of the final 13 points as John Jay earned its first win of the season.

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot close to 50.0 percent from the floor (30 of 62) while hitting a season-high 11 three-pointers on 41 percent shooting. Old Westbury hit 31.7 percent while connecting on 31.3 percent from the outside.

John Jay will gear up for its first home contest of the 2025-26 season, as the Bloodhounds welcome Greenville (IL) to The Doghouse for Homecoming.
