Women's Basketball Posts Near Wire-To-Wire Road Victory At The University of Saint Joseph, 69-55, For First Win Of 2025-26

West Hartford, CT - The John Jay women's basketball team held a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and didn't look back as the Bloodhounds picked up their first win of the season, defeating the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays, 69-55, on the road at the James A. Calhoun Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

With the win, it snapped a four-game losing streak to the Blue Jays and marked the 98th career win for head coach Lynda Day in the process.
 



John Jay had three players score in double figures, led by Michaela Lattimore, who came within a point of her career-high of 24 points, as she netted 23 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field to go along with 12 rebounds, marking her fifth double-double of the season. Additionally, this marked her seventh time in eight games grabbing double-digit caroms. Lattimore filled the stat sheet, finishing with four steals, three assists, and a block in her 29 minutes of action while going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Briana Minick chipped in 16 points on an efficient 7 of 13 shooting performance while grabbing five caroms and recording two steals. Natalie Simonds was the third Bloodhound to score in double-digits, finishing with ten points on 3 of 6 shooting while tying a career-high with eight rebounds. She also dished out a team-leading four helpers in the victory.

University of Saint Joseph also had three players score in double-figures, led by Sequoia Turcotte Briggs, who finished with a team-high 14 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field and 5 of 7 from the line. Ella Kulas had 13 points while Nevaeh Yorke finished with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Jays got on the board first with a jumper by Trinity Cruz before Lattimore scored John Jay's first basket on their first offensive possession. Turcotte Briggs hit a pair from the line before the Bloodhounds staged a 10-2 run, capped by a Essence Richardson jumper off the feed from Lattimore that made it 12-6 in favor of the visitors. Morgan Kimmi hit two from the line with 15 seconds left in the first quarter as John Jay held a 16-10 lead.

The visitors connected on 43.8 percent from the field while holding USJ to just 20.0 percent shooting in the opening ten minutes.


USJ opened up the second quarter with a pair of buckets to trim the deficit down to two, 16-14, but an 11-3 burst by the Bloodhounds upped their lead to 27-17 following a jumper by Simonds with just 2:29 to go before halftime. The Blue Jays closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run, with Yorke scoring four of the final six points, including two free throws before the break, as John Jay led 27-23.

When play commenced for the second half, the Bloodhounds found their spark, igniting a 10-0 run, with Minick hitting a corner triple off the pass from Simonds and capping it with a made free-throw from Lattimore as the lead increased to 35-23.

Kulas stopped the run by converting on a traditional three-point play following a jumper in the paint. John Jay closed out the third quarter on a 14-6 run and held a 16-point advantage at 49-33. The Bloodhounds converted on 7 of 16 from the field (43.8 percent) while limiting the Blue Jays to just 21.4 shooting in the quarter (3 of 14) as John Jay finished the stanza outscoring USJ, 22-10.

The Blue Jays trimmed the lead down to eight, 51-43, midway through the fourth quarter when Kulas hit one of two from the line. USJ built some momentum, cutting the double-digit deficit down to six, 57-51, with 2:46 left to play in regulation on a Cruz layup.

Richardson stole the ball away from Reagan Heafey-De Angelis, leading to a coast-to-coast layup by the senior. On the ensuing possession, Minick poked the ball away from Kulas and converted on the layup that forced USJ to call a timeout as the Bloodhounds' lead elevated to 62-51 with 2:04 left to play.  

John Jay continued to turn up the defensive intensity, as Lattimore stole the ball, which led to another layup from Minick, and the Bloodhounds were up 64-51. John Jay scored five of the final nine points, as Richardson got past her defender for two off the feed from Lattimore, with the Bloodhounds holding on for their first win of the season.

For the game, the Bloodhounds converted on 46.6 percent from the field (27 of 58) while connecting on 70.0 percent from the free-throw line (14 of 20). John Jay held a 41-35 edge on the boards, highlighted by a 31-23 advantage on the defensive glass.


Saint Joseph hit on 31.1 percent from the floor (19 of 61) while both teams committed 21 turnovers as John Jay converted those mishaps into 21 points.

John Jay returns home to The Doghouse, as three of the next four games will be played there, starting on Saturday with the CUNYAC opener against Lehman.


Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
