Women's Hoops Falls In CUNYAC Lidlifter At The Doghouse On Saturday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team held a slim one-point lead in the final minutes of the second quarter, but the visiting Lehman College Lightning outscored the Bloodhounds, 21-14, in the final quarter as John Jay fell in the conference opener, 70-62, on Saturday afternoon.

The Bloodhounds fall to 1-8 while the Lightning moves to 6-3.


Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Essence Richardson, who netted 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting while converting on 4 of 7 from three-point range in 30 minutes of work.


Michaela Lattimore continued her impressive start to her third season, as the junior forward produced her sixth double-double of the season and third straight, finishing with 12 points and 14 rebounds. 
Newcomer Miah Crockett matched her season-best, scoring 11 points on 4 of 6 while also grabbing six rebounds.

Heaven Figueroa led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Isabela Araujo finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Sage Fanelli tallied 11 points. Emily Kennedy notched seven points, ten rebounds, six assists, five steals, and a block.


Lehman opened the contest on a 9-0 run before the Bloodhounds rallied back on a 13-0 run, in which they didn't allow a Lightning field goal over a 4:09 span as Lehman went 0-10 from the field and the Bloodhounds converted on 50.0 percent, with Richardson scoring six of the 13 points. The Lightning closed out the first quarter on a 7-3 burst as Lattimore hit on one of two from the line to tie the game at 16.

John Jay opened the second quarter with a 7-3 run that extended their lead to 23-19 following a Lattimore layup. Lehman answered back with a 7-0 to take a 26-23 lead following a Kennedy layup with 6:11 remaining before halftime. Briana Minick responded with a three-pointer off the pass from Lattimore.

The two teams struggled down the stretch of the first half, as Richardson hit a triple with 2:07 left before Araujo answered with a three-pointer of her own as the Lightning held a 34-32 lead at the break.

Lehman opened the third quarter on an 8-3 run to extend its lead to 42-35 on a three-pointer from Araujo. John Jay continued to fight back in the contest, closing out the third quarter on a 13-7 run, as Crockett beat the third quarter horn with a steal and a layup as the Bloodhounds trailed 49-48.

The visitors opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three pointers from Figueroa and Fanelli before Kennedy and Araujo added layups to cap the 10-0 run. John Jay rallied back with a 7-0 run, capped by a Richardson three-pointer as the Bloodhounds trailed 59-55 with 4:42 remaining in the contest. On the ensuing Lehman possession, Fanelli hit a three to push the lead to 62-55.

The Bloodhounds got to within two, 62-60, as Crockett hit a three-pointer off the feed from Natalie Simonds. The Lightning closed the game on an 8-2 run as Figueroa hit two free throws.

John Jay outmuscled Lehman, 55-46, on the boards. Both teams hit on 34 percent from the field.

The Bloodhounds continue CUNYAC play on Thursday, December 11, as they travel to York for a 5:00 p.m. start.
