Men's Volleyball Sweeps Home Tri-Match With Victories Over Widener And Penn State Schuylkill On Saturday

New York, NY - Playing in front of their home fans for the first time in 2025, the John Jay men's volleyball team picked up two victories, defeating Widener (3-1) and Penn State Schuylkill (3-0). 

Widener blanked Penn State Schuylkill in the middle match, 3-0.

After dropping the first set 25-20, the Bloodhounds outlasted the Pride 29-27 in the second set and earned back-to-back 25-22 victories to pick up their first win of the afternoon. 

Graduate outside hitter Logan Ramos hit .441 en route to picking up a team-leading 16 kills while adding three assists, two digs, and an ace. The Riverdale, NY, native now has 608 career kills and 490 career digs. 

Newcomer Nick Fuentes recorded 13 kills while adding five digs. Omar Alaoui registered 11 kills and six digs. Micah Rossman tallied a team-leading 11 digs, while senior setter Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo notched 21 assists in the victory. 

Matthew Christ and Michael Martino each paced Widener with 14 kills and four digs. Christian Wannamaker added 13 kills, while Stephen Marquis finished with 11 kills. Jarrett Edwards led the Pride with 10 digs, while Josh Matchett posted 34 assists.

In the first set, the Bloodhounds took a 4-2 lead before the visitors staged a 9-2 run, holding an 11-6 lead. John Jay trimmed the deficit down to three, 13-10, on a kill by Adam Bainey. Widener held a 17-12 lead following a kill from Wannamaker before the Bloodhounds sparked an 8-5 run, thanks to another kill from Bainey as John Jay trialed 22-20. Widener closed out the set with a kill from Anioma Njokanma.

Trailing 3-0 to start the second set, John Jay recorded their first point as Ramos booted the ball on the return, finding Alaoui, who finished the set with a kill.



The two teams exchanged points for much of the set. The Bloodhounds had set point before Marquis killed the rally and added a second kill to go up 25-24. The Pride took a 26-25 lead before a service error by Marquis and a kill by Rossman gave John Jay a one-point edge. Fuentes recorded a kill, and an attack error by Wannamaker sealed the set for the Bloodhounds after they hit .382 for the set.


The third set was similar to the second, with the two teams exchanging points. Widener was up 14-12 following an ace by Matchett. John Jay outscored the Pride, 12-7, taking a 24-21 lead following a kill from Ramos. Maxwell Law sealed the set with a kill. The Bloodhounds hit .348, while Widener only converted .240.

In the fourth set, the Bloodhounds made a run with Gonzalez Verdejo at the serve, as Ramos added to his ledger with two kills and increased the lead to 10-7. Widener rallied back with a 4-1 run capped by a block from Christ and Josh Akinwale. Down 15-14, the Bloodhounds rattled off five straight points, capped by an ace from Attila Nerette. The visitors climbed back into the contest, trailing 23-22 following an attack error. John Jay recorded two straight kills for the match.

The Bloodhounds secured their second win of the day, besting Penn State Schuylkill for the second straight week.
Steven Ajazi led the way for the Bloodhounds with eight kills, two blocks, and an ace. Sebastian Rodriguez finished with six kills.

Jimmy Thinlay recorded 21 assists, while Eugene Villarruz paced the team with five digs.

Reno Plesnarski had nine kills. Liam Ruggie had 16 assists, while David Imeogu finished with six digs.

John Jay jumped out to a 12-4 advantage, highlighted by a Law ace. With the score 15-7 in favor of the Bloodhounds, the home team extended the lead with Thinlay recording back-to-back aces that made it 20-7. Two kills from Bainey and Rodriguez sealed the set.

In the second set, PSUS jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a kill from Ajazi. John Jay used a 10-1 to take the lead, 15-10. The home team continued their run, outscoring the Nittany Lions, 5-1, to push the lead to 20-12. The visitors inched closer on a kill from Piesnarski before Rodriguez killed the momentum. Ajazi recorded the kill for the 2-0 lead in the set.

In the third set, the visitors raced to a 4-2 lead following a kill from Plesnarski. John Jay staged a 5-0 run, capped by a block from Ajazi and Alaoui that gave John Jay a 7-4 lead.

PSUS got to within four, 16-12, before the Bloodhounds closed the match on an 8-2 run, a kill from Rossman.

John Jay returns to the court on Tuesday, February 11 as they welcome Yeshiva to The Doghouse with first-serve set for 7:00 p.m.
