Women's Basketball Best Lehman, 64-49, On Senior Night

New York, NY -  The John Jay women's basketball team continued their push toward the postseason as they defeated the Lehman College Lightning, 64-49.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 9-14 overall and 7-5 in CUNYAC play. Lehman falls to 11-12 on the year and also 7-5 in league matches. 

Before the start of the contest, the Bloodhounds recognized their three seniors - Hadja Bah, Ayanna Edwards, and Ashley Zeolla.
 



Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Michaela Lattimore, who notched her ninth double-double of the year, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting while pulling down ten rebounds in 21 minutes of play. The Morristown, NJ native filled up the stat sheet, recording four blocks, two steals, and an assist. 

Natalie Simonds scored 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting, which included 2 of 3 from three-point range. Edwards chipped in ten points to go along with a team-best seven helpers.

Heaven Figueroa and Emily Kennedy each finished with 20 points on a combined 13 of 52 from the field and 4 of 14 from three-point range. Figueroa grabbed nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Kennedy added seven caroms, four assists and four steals. 

John Jay opened the contest on a 6-0 run, capped with Lattimore converting the traditional three-point play from the line. The visitors scored the next five points to trim the deficit to one, 6-5 as Kennedy converted on the layup. 

The Bloodhounds sparked a 10-2 run over the final five minutes, taking a 16-7 lead as Zeolla converted on the reverse layup. During this run, John Jay went a perfect 6 of 6 from the free-throw line while not allowing Lehman to hit on a field goal in seven attempts. 

Kennedy started the second quarter for the visitors with a pair of made baskets, trimming the John Jay lead down to four, 17-13.

Lehman continued to chip away at the deficit, scoring eight of the next 12 points over the two-minute span to even the game at 21 after Figueroa hit a corner triple.

The Bloodhounds caught lightning in a bottle, staging a 13-2 run over the final 3:07 of the frame to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room.

John Jay went a perfect 5 of 5 from the floor while not allowing the visitors to convert a field goal in four chances. Essence Richardson soared to the goal for the quarter's final point.

The Bloodhounds hit on 50.0 percent in the quarter (7 of 14) while outrebounding the Lightning, 13-6. John Jay continued to build upon its lead, using an 11-3 run over the first 3:18 of the third quarter to take a 45-26 advantage following a layup by Simonds.

The visitors used a 15-1 run over the next 6:07 to get within five, 46-41, as Kennedy made a pair of free throws.

Prior to time expiring in the third, Simonds drilled a top of the key three-pointer off the feed from Bah as the Bloodhounds took a 49-41 lead in the final frame.

Alexis Jones connected on a corner three-pointer that bumped the lead to 11, 52-41 to start the fourth quarter. 

The Bloodhounds outscored the Lightning, 15-8, in the final frame to pick up the victory.

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 36.7 percent from the field (22 of 60) while holding Lehman to just 22.7 percent shooting (17 of 75). John Jay held a 55-50 edge on the boards, outmuscling the Lightning 41-29 on the defensive glass. 

The Bloodhounds will return to the court on Friday, February 14, as they travel to CCNY for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
