Men's Hoops Comeback Attempt Falls Short At CCNY, 75-66

New York, NY - Trailing by 14 at halftime, the John Jay men's basketball cut the deficit down to seven with 26 seconds left but it wasn't enough as the Bloodhound fell to the CCNY Beavers, 75-66, on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 17-7 overall and 10-3 in CUNYAC play while CCNY moves to 10-9 overall and 6-7 in league contests.

Three Bloodhounds scored in double-figures, led by Jamir Stewart, who dropped a team-leading 16 points. Keyshawn Miller netted all of his 13 points in the second half while filling up the stat sheet, grabbing seven rebounds, swiping six steals, dishing out four helpers, and recording two blocks. Isaac Holmes was the third Bloodhound in double-digits, finishing with 11 points. He also corralled eight rebounds, and had two steals and two blocks. Jordan Evelyn and TJ Chisolm each had nine points with Evelyn grabbing a team-leading ten rebounds and distributing a team-best six assists.

CCNY also had three players score in double-figures, led by Justin Morety, who tallied a game-high 22 points on 7 of 16 shooting. Edward Beqiri netted 13 points while Chris Stone scored 12 points. Both grabbed nine rebounds with Stone leading the way with six assists and three steals. 

CCNY scored the first four points of the contest before Jeremiah Cardi converted on a layup from Isaac HolmesFrom that point, the Beavers staged an 18-4 run over a 6:16 span, leading John Jay 22-6 following a layup from David Leye. The Bloodhounds finished the first half outscoring CCNY, 13-11, as Holmes hit a three-pointer off the feed from Miller as John Jay trailed 35-21 heading into the locker rooms. 

CCNY opened the second half on a 6-0 run to build a 20-point lead (41-21) before Miller scored his first points of the contest, a layup from Evelyn. Over the next 5:15, the Bloodhounds started to make their comeback, as Miller hit a three-pointer. John Jay outscored CCNY, 27-15, over the next 10:31, as they trailed 71-64 following a pair of made free-throws from Emmanuel Adenekan

The Bloodhounds converted 8 of 23 from the field but capitalized from the free-throw line, hitting 9 of 12. The Beavers, over the same span, shot 3 of 12 from the floor and only hit 9 of 17 from the line. Morety converted on a pair from the charity stripe with 20 seconds that made it 73-64. Evelyn tracked down the loose ball from a misfired three from Miller and put it back up with eight seconds left. 

The Bloodhounds burned a timeout. On the ensuing possession, John Jay fouled Morety, who made both, sealing the game for the Beavers.

The Bloodhounds will close out the regular season on Tuesday, February 18, as the travel to Brooklyn to take on Medgar Evers.
