Men's Volleyball Splits Saturday's CUNYAC Tri-Match Against Brooklyn And Hunter

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team split its CUNYAC Tri-Match against the visiting Brooklyn College Bulldogs and the Hunter College Hawks. In the opening match, the Bloodhounds defeated the Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-19; 25-21; 26-24) before falling to the Hawks, 3-0 (18-25; 20-25; 18-25). It was the first loss in conference play for the Bloodhounds this season.

Freshman Nick Fuentes registered a double-double, finishing with a team-high 10 kills and 11 digs as John Jay won their third straight CUNYAC matchup and fourth consecutive match in defeating the visiting Brooklyn Bulldogs, 3-0. Adam Bainey finished with five kills. Evan Wandersee had two aces while Maxwell Law finished with a team-high 20 assists. 

Brooklyn was paced by Aaron Siu, who notched 13 kills and five digs and teammate Joaquin Calderon, who had 10 kills. Dion Csikortos led the way with ten digs. David Lema finished the contest with 26 assists and seven digs. 

Both teams exchanged points with John Jay taking a two-point lead, 12-10, following a mishit from Calderon. Brooklyn went a 6-1 run in building a 16-13 advantage following a kill from Siu.
John Jay answered back with a 7-2 spurt to make it 20-18 before Steven Ajazi's serve hit the net. The Bloodhounds finished the set on a 5-0 burst with Wandersee serving up two aces, the last clinching the first point of the match for John Jay. 

In the second set, the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 6-2 lead with back-to-back kills from Ajazi and Fuentes before Calderon recorded two straight points, including an ace. John Jay doubled up their lead, first to 10-5 and then 12-6, both with Bainey notching the kill. Brooklyn got to within two, 13-11, but the Bloodhounds used an 8-4 run to go up 21-15. The visitors kept fighting back, cutting the deficit to three, 21-18, and once more at 24-21, following an ace from Ali Zandani. Law killed the rally as John Jay went ahead 2-0. 

In the third set, Brooklyn raced to a 4-2 before the Bloodhounds tied the set at 5-5 on a Omar Alaoui kill. The Bulldogs had extended their advantage to 11-8 on a kill from Calderon before the Bloodhounds utilized a 6-1 run, taking a 14-12 lead after Alaoui and Ajazi combined for the block. The run extended as John Jay built a 14-4 run to lead 22-15. Brooklyn responded with a 9-2 run of their own, tying the set at 24 on attack error. The Bloodhounds were the benefactors of two attack errors by the Bulldogs, closing out the win. 

For the match, John Jay hit .212, highlighted by a .417 hitting percentage in the second set. Both teams finished with seven blocks in the match, three of which came from Ajazi.

John Jay 0, Hunter 3

The Bloodhounds fought valiantly against the Hunter Hawks before falling in three-sets. Micah Rossman and Alaoui each had five kills with Rossman pacing the club with six digs. Alex Bridgelall finished with 12 assists.

Ahmed Mohamed led the way for the Hawks with 20 points in the match, as he recorded 13 kills, five aces, and four digs. Kyle Foley had eight kills, and three digs. Charles Pampliega had 17 assists while Wesley Stubbs finished with 13 assists. 

Hunter jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before outscoring the Hawks, 11-7, in taking a 12-11 lead following a kill from Fuentes. Hunter staged an 13-5 run to get to set point and closed the set with a kill from Annes Deljanin. 

The Bloodhounds commenced the second set with a 3-0 lead after kill from Fuentes. Hunter responded with an 8-4 run thanks to kill from Lucas George. The visitors started to pull away, outscoring the Bloodhounds 15-9 in taking a 23-17 lead. Two straight miss reads by Hunter kept John Jay in the set before Bainey got up for the emphatic kill as the Bloodhounds trailed 24-20. Foley capped the set with a kill as Hunter went up 2-0.

John Jay started the third set strong, going ahead 5-3 as Bainey continued to stop the Hawks. Hunter went up 16-11 on a 13-6 burst, capped by another kill from Deljanin. John Jay climbed back in the set, trimming the deficit down to two, 16-14, The Hawks finished the match scoring nine of the final 13 points as the Bloodhounds suffered their first conference loss of the season. 

John Jay mustered to hit .050 over the three-sets with Hunter hitting at a .257 clip.

The Bloodhounds embark on three-game road swing, beginning Tuesday, March 4 at Medgar Evers.
