Men's Volleyball Falls At Baruch In Four Sets

New York, NY - The John Jay College men's volleyball team took the opening set, 25-23, before dropping the next three, 20-25; 23-25, 21-25 to the Baruch College Bearcats on Thursday evening. 

The Bloodhounds fall to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in CUNYAC play, while the Bearcats improve to 8-7 overall and remain perfect in conference action at 7-0.

Nick Fuentes and Micah Rossman each paced the Bloodhounds with 12 kills and seven digs. Fuentes added a team-leading three aces. Attila Nerette added six kills, two digs, and two blocks. Jimmy Thinlay produced a double-double, finishing with 36 assists and 11 digs. 

Three Bearcats had double-digit kills, led by Noah Pak's game-high 18 kills. Argjend Osmanaj and Ari Osmanaj each had ten kills. Argjend finished with 11 digs. Ryan Oommen had 44 assists to go along with 12 digs and five kills in the win for the Bearcats.

Baruch held a 4-3 lead following a kill from Kairos Liang. John Jay rallied to score 12 of the next 19 points, as Fuentes recorded the kill, giving John Jay a 15-11 advantage. The Bearcats answered back, scoring 11 of the next 19 points before Fuentes notched the kill, tying the set at 23. Evan Wandersee checked in and got the Bloodhounds to set point before Adam Bainey, and Thinlay recorded the block, giving John Jay the 1-0 lead in the match. The Bloodhounds hit .346 in the opening set, limiting Baruch to just .214.

John Jay opened the second set on a 6-1 run. Baruch rallied back on the strength of a 15-9 run, taking a 16-15 lead. The Bearcats continued their run, a 9-5 stretch, taking the second set, 25-20.

John Jay commenced the third set in fast fashion, leading 8-3 thanks to an ace from Thinlay. Baruch clawed their way back, scoring 16 of the next 26 points, capped by a Pak kill, giving the Bearcats a 19-18 lead. John Jay got to within one, 24-23, but a kill from Argjend Osmanaj sealed the point for the home team. 

Both teams traded points to commence the fourth set before the Bloodhounds grabbed a three-point lead, 8-5, on a kill by Bainey. Baruch rattled off a 12-8 burst, taking a 17-16 lead. Maxwell Law brought the visitors to within two points, 22-20, on a kill before the Bearcats closed out the set for the win. 

For the match, John Jay hit .203 while Baruch was at .237. The Bearcats produced 54 kills to John Jay's 42 while adding 54 digs.

John Jay will head to York on Tuesday, March 11 with first-serve set for 7:00 p.m.
