Men's Volleyball Blanks York On Tuesday Evening

Jamaica, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team returned to the winning column on Tuesday, as the Bloodhounds blanked the York College Cardinals, 3-0 (25-21; 25-23; 25-15).

The Bloodhounds move to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Cardinals fall to 3-9 and 1-5 in the conference.

Nick Fuentes led the way with 17 kills and four digs, adding an assist and a block. Adam Bainey was next with seven kills, while Sebastian Rodriguez and Omar Alaoui each added five kills.

Eugene Villarruz paced John Jay with eight digs, while Jimmy Thinlay added 23 assists and five digs.

York's Sebastian Gomez paced the team with 13 kills and four digs. David Heyliger Jr. added nine kills and three digs. Stanley Sanchez notched 25 assists and five digs. 

The Bloodhounds recorded five straight kills to open the set before York rallied to tie it 7-7. John Jay posted a 13-7 burst to take a 20-14 lead. York narrowed the gap thanks to a 7-4 run, capped by a Joseph Lebron ace that trimmed the deficit to 24-20 before Fuentes notched the kill for the set winner.

York opened the second on a 5-2 run before the Bloodhounds answered with a 10-5 run, taking a 12-10 lead. The Cardinals regained the lead with a 6-1 burst, leading 16-13 following a kill from Gomez. 

The teams traded points over the latter half of the set, as Alexis Ramirez notched a kill that tied the set at 22 before John Jay closed the set on a 3-1 mini run for the 25-23 winner. The Bloodhounds hit .324 in the second set while limiting York to .121. 

In the third and final set, the two teams exchanged points, as the set was tied at 6-6 before John Jay went on an 8-0 run to take a 14-6 lead. The run continued in favor of John Jay, using a 6-3 run to increase the lead to 20-9 following an attack error by Gomez. 

York scored four of the following six points to chip into the lead, but the Bloodhounds ended the match with a Bainey kill. 

John Jay returns home to the Doghouse on March 13 as they welcome Lehman for a 6:00 pm first-serve.
