Men's Volleyball Blanks Lehman At The Doghouse On Thursday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team took the regular-season matchup with Lehman College, sweeping the Lightning in straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) on Thursday evening.

The Bloodhounds (13-5; 5-2 CUNYAC) outpaced Lehman (11-5; 3-5 CUNYAC) 43-23 in kills and hitting at a .304 clip, while the Lightning were limited to a .117 hitting percentage. The Bloodhounds recorded 41 assists to the Lightning's 21 while producing eight service aces in the victory. 

Adam Bainey recorded 13.5 points as the first-year Bloodhound recorded 13 kills, two digs, two aces, and 1.5 blocks. Nick Fuentes led the team with 12 kills and was one dig short of a double-double, finishing with a team-high nine digs. Eugene Villarruz matched Fuentes with nine digs. Jimmy Thinlay recorded 24 assists, while Micah Rossman served up three aces, six kills, and five digs in the win. 

Emmanuel Cochran paced Lehman with five kills, 1.5 blocks, and a dig. John Zerafa had a team-best eight digs while notching a team-high 16 assists. 

The teams traded points in the early portion of the first set until John Jay went up 18-12 on a kill from Bainey, capping the 11-6 run by John Jay. Lehman fought back, getting to within five, 24-19, following an attack error, but Bainey came up with the kill for the first-set winner. 

The Bloodhounds jumped to a 5-1 lead in the second set as Thinlay posted the kill. Lehman responded with a 4-1 run of their own, thanks to a kill from Ray Rodriguez. John Jay staged an 8-2 run to double up their lead, 14-7, as Rossman delivered a hard-hitting kill.  The Lightning powered back, scoring 12 of the next 22 points in trimming the deficit down to five, 24-19 off an attack error from the Bloodhounds. Fuentes leaped high and posted the kill that clinched the second set for the Bloodhounds. 

John Jay continued their dominance in the match, racing out to a 5-2 lead in the third set as Bainey added another kill to his ledger. Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo added to the Bloodhounds lead, 16-10, on a behind-the-back kill after receiving the pass from Sebastian Rodriguez. The Bloodhounds closed the match on a 9-5 run, capped by a kill from Alex Bridgelall. John Jay had the best hitting percentage of the match in the third set, .370, while Lehman was held to just .043.

The Bloodhounds return to the court on Saturday, March 15, as they will travel to Brooklyn to square off against the host Bulldogs and Russell Sage College in a Tri-Match. The Bloodhounds and Bulldogs will meet at 11:00 am before taking on Russell Sage at 1:00 p.m.
